Phenom Hoops tuned in to Tuesday night’s game between Wesleyan Christian and Durham Academy, as both teams looked to get the season underway.  Getting this game underway, it was the long ball from three that got Wesleyan out early led by their seniors, Luke Grace and Jefferson McLamb. But Jake Chisholm kept Durham Academy close early on leading the way with his shot-making, as well as getting to the line early on.  However, shots continued to fall for Wesleyan, as they created their first double-digit lead in the final seconds of the first quarter, 22-12. Second quarter, Wesleyan continued to run their offense, look for the best shot, and mix it up on the floor while Durham Academy struggled at times to put the ball in the basket.  It allowed Wesleyan to increase their lead even more and eventually leading 42-19 at halftime.

The offensive continued to find success in the third and maintain their lead but Durham Academy did find more of their offense once again with their outside shooting.  However, they were still down at the end of the third, 64-35.  From then on, Wesleyan was on cruise control to open the season off with a nice 80-47 victory at home.

Wesleyan Christian: 22 – 20 – 22 – 16: 80
Durham Academy: 12 – 7 – 16 – 12: 47

Stats:
Wesleyan Christian: Jefferson McLamb 19 points/ Luke Grace 19/ Luke Morgan 10/ Trenton Jackson 9
Durham Academy: Jake Chisholm 22 points/ JP Dilweg 6/ Alex Dunk 5/ Blake Ragsdale 5

Standouts:

2022 Jefferson McLamb (Wesleyan): McLamb had a strong performance, scoring 19 points and securing five rebounds; even gave us a few highlight plays. McLamb though is one to really watch for, as the 6’5 senior can score in an array of ways. He makes quick, decisive decisions offensively, whether it is knocking down shots from the perimeter, putting it on the deck to create, or getting downhill and showing off his sneaky bounce and finishing at the rim. Gets out well in transition but doesn’t force anything offensively; plays well within the offense. He is one that coaches should be looking at more.

2022 Luke Grace (Wesleyan): Grace plays a key role for this team, as the 6’9 senior helps down low but really opens up the offense with his comfort level from behind the arc.  The stretch forward operates well from three, getting to his spot and knocking down threes when left open.  Grace also shows good footwork and fundamentals down in the post, scoring around his defender.

2023 Jake Chisholm (Durham Academy): Chisholm led the way for Durham Academy and did much of his damage from beyond the arc. He moved well without the ball and the offense looked to create open shots for him. When he stepped in rhythm, he showcased a smooth and confident outside shot.
