Leland Coleman 6’6 160 2023 Trinity Episcopal School, Richmond VA

Leland is a long and wiry wing who just exploded in terms of length over the last year adding seven inches to his frame and he’s now beginning to see his body fill out physically. His doctor says that was not even his real growth spurt which is a scary thought! With that comes more confidence and the ability to use very good skills and versatility to impose his will on opponents. Not the physical presence his Duke Blue Devil brother Henry is, but Leland brings a different style as a slasher type who can create off the bounce and knock down jumpers even from beyond the arc with good consistency. Leland has a smooth offensive game sound shot mechanics and a fluid stroke. He is extremely athletic and runs the floor well, very good mobility.

Leland demonstrates the ability to handle the ball and create offense off the dribble using basic crossovers but his length allows him to eat up space quickly. He can knock down the catch and shoot three-pointer at a good rate and attacks hard closeouts using shot fakes. a quick rip and length attacking space. Can pull up off the dribble and knock down shots and has a very good touch finishing with runners or on finishes off the glass. Mid-range game has shown solid improvement. He is adept at improvising on drives and creating shots on the move. Leland is a very good rebounder who regularly grabs rebounds outside his area due to his mammoth wingspan and ability to elevate quickly off the floor. Very good finisher, plays through contact nicely, and plays stronger than his lengthy frame suggests. Leland has excellent footwork around the rim and is active on the glass. Defensively he demonstrates pretty good quickness and lateral mobility. His wingspan and solid footwork allows him to pressure some guards and not get beat. He is active off the ball defensively and is quick in his rotations. He hunts down rebounds nicely and requires attention given his aggressiveness pursuing loose balls and rebounds.

Leland’s progress has been impressive and he will be a game-changing presence. He can snatch a rebound off the glass and lead the break or go coast to coast and finish. He can get a basket from anywhere on the floor with either the jumper or using the dribble. As mentioned earlier, Leland is the younger brother of Duke freshman Henry Coleman. His style of play is different as is his frame but his impact could potentially be as prominent. His athletic roots are Impressive. His Dad Hank Coleman played college football at Virginia Tech under the legendary Frank Beamer and his Mom, Cynthia was a record-breaking track star at Northampton High School on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. She once held and still may hold the record for the fastest time in the 400 meter race. Mrs. Coleman attended the University of Virginia and the University of Richmond. Leland has that solid foundation to build from and his tireless work ethic will help him establish his own niche. Leland Coleman is a must-see prospect in Virginia’s 2023 class!
