Given their long, storied history over the last 63 years, the number of talented athletes to go through Page High School should come as no surprise to anyone. While majority of their “notable alumni” list consists of NFL players, the basketball program has seen an abundance of success in its own regard. In looking at the structure of last year’s team, the Pirates really relied on the production of their seniors (Jaden Ellis, Zion Connor, Daryl Phifer, and Mike Maxwell) and two juniors (Josh Scovens and Tyler McIntyre) to carry the load. With four rotation pieces set to graduate, Coach Fancourt and staff will be tasked with replacing over fifty percent of their scoring. Add in the loss of their leader and primary ball-handler in Ellis, and guys like Grady Sherrill and Thomas Stafford become even more pivotal to the success of this team. While they might’ve been unexpected candidates to some, both guys have been consistently producing throughout the travel ball season with their respective NC Spartans squads.

The NC Spartans Hartzell roster is an incredibly balanced group, and Sherrill’s unwavering presence is a massive part of their success. He’s not loud or flashy, which often allows him to soar under the radar and catch opponents by surprise with his ability to make critical, timely plays. Sherrill handles the ball with poise and plays with an excellent pace to his game, showcasing a calm demeanor and unselfish mentality at all times. He’s a capable all-around scorer, but usually only looks to apply pressure when necessary and within the flow of the action. Sherrill makes quality reads as a playmaker and looks to set up others whenever possible, especially in transition. He also provides a scrappy defensive presence and understanding of how to make plays with or without the ball in his hands.

Although younger, NC Spartans Brown has certainly shown their ability to compete with various notable opponents—and Stafford always seems to be leading at the forefront of the operation. While the 5-foot-10 point guard is somewhat unassuming at first glance, he’s truly done so much to further his game over the recent years and seems to be finally enjoying the fruits of his labor. Although smart and skilled, Stafford’s toughness and willingness to do the dirty work is part of what makes him so problematic for opposing guards. Add in his playmaking sense and useful scoring ability, and it’s easy to see how he emerges as a tone-setter on a nightly basis for this group. Though both guys will still have to battle for their opportunities next season, Sherrill and Stafford have certainly made an impression with their play over the recent months.
