On Saturday, Phenom Hoops will travel to Carmel Christian in Matthews, North Carolina to host our sixth annual Phenom Hoops MLK Showcase. The one-day event will begin at noon and the final game will start at 7:30, featuring six games of exciting action between twelve highly talented programs—both from public and private ranks. In preparation for the event, we will take a closer look at each matchup and highlight individual players to monitor…
The second contest of our MLK Showcase takes place between Butler High School (9-7) and Corvian Community School (5-5). Since taking over the Bulldogs in 2020-21, Coach King has maintained a consistent level of success. Regardless of roster construction, player movement, or various unforeseen factors, this group is always a challenging opponent. This squad is no different, as the veteran-laden core of Terrance Badio, Caleb Milligan, Eli Grier, and Reece Starnes carry most of the production. However, sophomores Isaiah White and Aree Branch also play vital roles. Meanwhile, Coach Murphy’s group has seemingly hit its stride after somewhat of a shaky start to the season—winning five of the last six games. The Cardinals are primarily led by the duo of RJ Moore and Malachi McCutcheon but have several useful pieces within this roster. Moore is an incredibly polished scorer who can fill it up as an offensive focal point while McCutcheon is a skilled, versatile forward with the ability to impact all facets of the game. Additionally, guys like Josiah Rucks, Demarkus Milton, and various others offer meaningful minutes. Despite losing in the title game last season, the Cardinals have the pieces to make another deep run. To stay the course, this will be a big test for both squads.
