The second game of Phenom Hoops’ MLK Showcase took place between two tough, competitive programs in Bull City Prep and Charlotte Elite Academy. It quickly opened up as a back-and-forth contest featuring numerous lead changes and both teams displaying great balance. Neither team had any issue finding ways to score the ball, which ultimately led to a 13-13 score through the first quarter. The second period offered more of the same, as the action remained very competitive and neither team was able to gain true separation. After trading baskets eight minutes, Charlotte Elite Academy claimed a 25-23 advantage going into halftime. Following the break, Bull City Prep starting clicking on all cylinders and turned their deficit into a 42-39 lead entering the final period of play. Charlotte Elite Academy started the fourth quarter on a 11-1 run and regained the lead. However, Bull City Prep mounted a 10-0 run of their own, secured the lead, and ultimately claimed a 56-54 victory over Charlotte Elite Academy.

Bull City Prep Durham:

6’7 ’22 Treyvon Byrd

It should come as no surprise to see the long, athletic, versatile wing/forward prospect as one of the top standouts from this contest. Byrd is a game-changing athlete with the ability to alter and block shots at a pretty high level, especially for his position. He knows how to position himself for steals and utilizes his length very well to overwhelm opponents defensively. Byrd knocked down a three-pointer, created effectively in transition, and made his presence felt inside the paint on both ends of the floor.

6’2 ’22 Rashon Leach

Like Byrd, Leach is somewhat of a steadying presence for this group, given the way he always seems to assert himself as a scorer and dynamic two-way piece. He can create for himself and others off the bounce or operate without the ball, both allowing him to apply scoring pressure from all three levels. Leach attacks the basket with poise, makes smart decisions with the ball in his hands, and defends his assignment effectively.

Charlotte Elite Academy:

6’2 ’23 Anthony Breland

After so much uncertainty surrounding Breland and his potential landing spot, he seems to have found a comfortable position with Charlotte Elite Academy as a primary option. He’s a sturdy guard prospect with a strong scoring arsenal and the ability to pile up points from all three levels. Breland is a capable passer with nice vision, but typically looks to assert himself as a scorer whenever possible. He’s great at absorbing contact, drawing fouls, and getting downhill in the open floor. Breland was the best player on the court for various parts of this contest.

5’10 ’23 Jahaan Johnson

Though young and slightly undersized, Johnson proved to be really disciplined and unselfish throughout this showing. He’s a useful all-around scorer with nice penetration instincts, but looks to set up others as often as possible. Johnson rebounds the ball well for his size/position, constantly surveys for cutting/open teammates, and understands how to make the correct read in transition. His IQ and unselfishness were evident on both ends of the floor.
