Player: Raphael Gay
Class: 2022
School: Winston Salem Christian
Players are starting to make their decisions on their future but there are SEVERAL other unsigned seniors that can help programs win games at the next level. One of those players that remains open is 2022 Raphael Gay from Winston Salem Christian.
Yes, when he first arrived at the school and we got our first look, his elite athleticism and highlight reel type game are what quickly grabbed your attention; it can be easily said that he may be one of the most athletic prospects in the state.
But as the season has continued, Gay has stepped up even more for his team, producing in a variety of ways and growing confidence every minute on the court.
“I feel that I have taken on a much greater importance in the team,” Gay said. “I manage to see my progress through the hard work of my coaches. I play with much more confidence and my role in the team is very well defined. I have also improved my shot; I have more initiative and success in scoring my shots.”
Gay continues to bring tremendous athleticism to the table, is strong in the open floor and in transition, but he is also showing that he can finish strong, help on the boards, and brings a tremendous motor to the table.
Right now, it seems that he is being undervalued for his game, which is why more schools should take a look his way and could snag an under-the-radar prospect. Right now, he has heard from several schools but it will be interesting to see which school takes a chance on this young high-flyer.
What Has Phenom Hoops Said:
“Continuing onto a player who was easily among the top performers on display at camp, Raphael Gay. He’s a strong, explosive, physically imposing forward prospect with an excellent frame and the ability to utilize his body to overwhelm opponents in a variety of different ways. He plays hard at all times, defends his position well, and consistently sets the tone as a rebounder. Gay is nearly unstoppable from getting downhill and finishing in transition. Next in his development process is working on his consistency as a three-point shooter, as it would make him even tougher for opponents to contain. Coach Dre on Gay: “Raphael is a highlight provider. He is bouncy for real, and will take anyone up to the rim with him. He punishes the rim with force and has a balance of grace. In transition, he runs the floor hard and finishes anything thrown his way. He has great hands and nice footwork in the post. His physical presence is quite noticeable, as he has the frame of a grown man. He plays with great intensity and was a pleasure to coach. This young man has tremendous upside.” Gay was a definite standout during camp, securing the Mr. Hustle award with relative ease, and should be a priority for various types of programs over the coming months.” – NC Top 80
“He’s a big, strong, mobile, physically imposing forward prospect who doesn’t need the ball in order to make a lasting impact. Gay is excellent on the glass and can push the break if needed, but typically runs the floor and capitalizes on transition opportunities as a finisher. His blend of toughness and explosiveness makes him an absolute nightmare for opponents to meet at the basket. He’s very active on both ends of the floor and consistently outworks others for extra opportunities.”
