In the history of North Carolina High School basketball, no player had ever scored over 1,000 points in a single season. That is until last year, when Darius McGhee scored 1,057 points during his 2015-16 season.

That is an amazing number considering the players who have come through the North Carolina High School League. This record gives McGhee more points than NBA stars such as Antawn Jamison, Brendan Haywood, Brandon Ingram, Michael Jordan, Jerry Stackhouse, PJ Tucker and prolific scorers such as Phil Ford, Akeem Richmond, JamesOn Curry, and Donald Williams.

McGhee’s 1,057 points scored is good for an average of 36.4 per game, which is also a North Carolina High School League record. He also holds the record for 12 40-point games in a single season and 22 30-point games in a single season.

McGhee finished with 363 field goals made and 150 3-point field goals made (which included a state record 14 in a single game). This year, the 5’9” junior has transferred to Blue Ridge School, in St George, Virginia. To say the least last year was one for the record books for McGhee.

While what Darius McGhee did was nothing short of spectacular, what Coby White did was also impressive. As a sophomore at Greenfield School, ESPN’s number 28 prospect averaged 28.2 points per game.

During his sophomore year, the UNC commit broke the Greenfield School record with 960 total points scored. Had White played public school he would be the 4th all time scorer in North Carolina High School history.

Over his last 3 games, last week during Greenfield Christmas Tournament, White scored 122 points. Through 11 games this year White has already scored 369 points which is good for a 33.5 average (meaning he is ahead of last year’s pace).

Without question, these two players had prolific seasons last year. They are both off to hot starts again this year, but no question they are able to do things with the ball that very few others are.

Make sure to watch Darius McGhee and his Blue Ridge team along with Coby White and his Greenfield team this week at Phenom’s Joe Miller Invitational. The national level tournament will last from Tuesday December 27 through Friday December 30.
