Phenom Hoop Report made its way back to Greensboro, NC for another great event, the Stay Positive Live tournament. As always, tons of talent was in the gym, a regular occurrence when Phenom comes to town. Some of the talent that stood out is as follows:
Sal-bey Young, 6’5 G with Carolina Elite – Young showed easy ability in all phases of the game while we were court side. He can defend 1-4 out on the floor with his quickness, length, and athletic ability. He can go get it off the glass. He can lead the break and make those around him better with deft finds. Plus, he can score the ball easily from all over the floor. When you see him play his long hair is what first grabs your attention but it is his game that makes you pay attention. Under the radar type player for sure.
Ikee Tabron, 6’3 G with Durham Hurricanes – We have seen Ikee play several times and each time he has proven to be an athletic player capable of putting up good numbers. His first game in front of us was not his best effort but he made up for it in his second appearance. Ikee is still growing as a player, moving from athlete to player but its been a journey that he has embraced and has allowed to happen naturally. He plays his game, blending what he can do in with what his team asks of him, and performs. We have enjoyed watching his maturation.
Asa White, 6’7 W with Team Wall – A dominate young athlete with length for days, easy moves, and raw untapped potential. He looks like a college 3 out on the floor with the body type and athleticism that suggest he has that game changer ability coaches seek. His bounce allows him to be a factor on the glass as well as on D while at the same time making him a scoring threat. Here is the crazy scary thing though, Asa is in the 7th grade and still has one year left of middle school. We have seen the future my friends, and its name is Asa!
George Pettaway, 5’10 G with Boo Williams 15u (BWSL) – Point guards are hard to find but easy to recognize when you see one out on the floor. George is a PG. His ability to drive and dish impressed all game long as he often passed his guys open for easy looks. Good first step allows him to get by his defender where he can pull-up, dish, or finish the drive. The shot needs to be dialed in somegoing forward but the vision, handles, and instincts to play the 1 are all here.
Chase Cannon, 6’6 F with TMP 15u – Chase shows the signs of being a solid big. It always seems to take bigs longer to develop and this may be the case here but he’s a player who will come into his own before long. Very skinny, he wil fill out and with that his power game will continue to grow. He contests well on defense and mistakes he made were often the result of being too aggressive. Lots to like here but still is a year or so away from being able to show all he is about.
