The state of South Carolina is constantly improving its basketball pipeline while increasing the number of high-level prospects throughout the area. Since joining Phenom Hoops, each South Carolina class has surpassed the talent from recent years. The 2018 Class was better than 2017, and one could argue that 2019 will be better than both of them. That being said, we should all come together to recognize how strong the Class of 2021 is shaping up to be, especially for our neighbor to the South. There’s a long list of prospects that will be deserving of national attention, but Cesare Edwards could realistically become the most coveted of the group.
For those who haven’t had the pleasure of seeing Edwards on the hardwood, he’s honestly one of the most unique players on the East Coast and has a perfect skillset for the direction basketball is going. Offensively, the 6-foot-8 forward looks to spot-up beyond the three-point arc and knock down shots whenever possible. However, Edwards also has the tendency to pump-fake, penetrate towards the basket, and punch it on whatever defender is available. Needless to say, he’s more athletic than opponents typically give him credit for. It’s somewhat difficult to identify his position at the next level, since he can play three positions comfortably in high school and has the aforementioned flamethrower from distance. Smart college programs will start tracking Edwards now, as he will almost certainly vault himself into the Top-100 conversation in due time.
