AAU: Anthony Morrow

We have had the luxury of watching 2022 Umar Lawson develop and play right in front of our eyes over the past few years. Whether it was in South Carolina or in Virginia, Lawson continues to attract eyes with his game.

The 6’3 guard displayed it again recently at the Grassroots TOC, where he simply couldn’t be stopped.  Lawson continues to be one of the better downhill guards that showcases explosion, athleticism, speed, and ability to finish strong.  Time after time, he was able to explode and get out in transition or blow by his defender to get to the rim and finish well.  With his aggressive game, he is at his best when attacking off the dribble but he still shows that he can pull-up and knock down shots from multiple levels as well.

Lawson currently holds an offer from South Carolina State and he did mention he has received some interest from other schools. But from what we have seen and he has shown, Lawson could be a nice steal for a program and he looks to be on a mission this summer to show more of his game.

What Has Phenom Hoops Said:

“He’s a long, explosive, team-first guard prospect with an elite motor and quality feel on both ends of the floor. Lawson is undeniably rugged and shows a consistent willingness to get his hands dirty, fighting for rebounds/extra possessions, defending the best opposing perimeter player, and simply outworking anyone in his path. Offensively, Lawson is an excellent penetrator that can play above the rim or finish through any amount of contact but also displays the necessary vision to make smart passes to open teammates. He’s a capable perimeter shooter with nice cutting instincts and the ability to make an impact without requiring offensive touches. Lawson was easily among the best rebounders for his position and was able to contain a variety of different opponents on defense, given his blend of length, strength, and positioning.” – SC Top 80 Evaluation

“Lawson is probably one of the better downhill guards at the event. Every time he had the ball in his hands, he is able to make decisive, downhill moves to get by defenders and finish strong at the rim. It was tough for opponents to stay in front of him.” – Patrick O’Brien from Phenom Grassroots TOC
