We continue to make our rounds around the state, recently heading over to Gaston Christian to check out the talent that will be on the court this year. After a strong season last year, this is a program that will have a few new names coming in but have the talent to really make some noise. Let’s dive into what we saw and who will be the players to watch.
To start, you have to look at one of the top players in the state for the class of 2024 in Jahseem Felton. Felton certainly checks off a lot of boxes early and has the attention of several high-major programs. He is a 6’5 prospect that plays with a strong, physical feel, and can operate on so many levels. He also is able to get his own basket when he wants but also makes several plays for others. A very talented young man looking to make a ton of noise this year.
Alongside of him will be another newcomer in 2023 Isaiah Tate, coming from Kings Mountain. The scoring guard can really fill it up, getting out in transition and scoring in a variety of ways. Also, watch out for 2024 Joe Rhyne, who is an absolute sharp-shooter from deep but has continued to get better in other areas on both ends of the floor. Gaston Christian also welcomes in a young point guard to watch in 2026 Cameron Newman, who should help provide depth at that position. He is a shifty young guard that creates well with his dribble.
2022 Greg Brockington returns for another year and should be one of the leaders for this group, as he brings that leadership to the team, makes smarts plays, can score on several levels, and is quick with the ball in his hands.
Watch out for 2023 Corey Gaines as well, as he could be a critical piece for this program, especially with his impact in an array of ways and not having to be a focal point for him to find success. Really plays hard, is a scrappy guard, and is unselfish on the floor.
2024 Edgar Escobedo brings size down low, as the 6’8 forward moves really well, runs the floor, and has the touch around the basket but can also step out and knock down shots. Gaston will also have 2023 Roman Hawk, who is a 6’5, strong prospect and 2023 Preston Shuford that should help with depth for this team.
There is talent to be found for sure with this program, and they are excited about this upcoming season as Gaston Christian hopes to make some noise once again.
