HS Coach Evaluation: Derek “DJ” White, has the ability to be as good as he wants to be. He is a combo guard that thrives in the passing lanes and takes the challenge on guarding the opposition’s best guard. His wing span wreaks havoc with his on the ball defense and his anticipation garners many deflections and turnovers. Derek comes from a tradition of good pg play in which his dad was an excellent floor general. DJ is an excellent rebounding guard and a mid range sniper. He has worked his way to become a threat from behind the arc, but prefers to drive to the basket. He finishes at the rim with either hand which draws a lot of fouls when he attacks. For his senior year at Nansemond Suffolk Academy, he will be called upon to put all of his talents to work. DJ will rise to the occasion, just like he always has. CLUTCH! – Coach Lamont Strothers
Coach Frank says: Derek is a very skilled, high IQ floor general who controls tempo, takes care of the basketball and is one of the better passers in the 757. He knows where his teammates are at all times and he knows his personnel, time and score, and understands situational basketball. He is a physical point guard who uses contact to his advantage and is a very good finisher versus contact. Derek can finish at the rim with either hand and also hits the middle jumper. He is a solid on ball defender with excellent defensive footwork and anticipation. He rebounds and is a very good shot blocker taking advantage of not only his impressive bounce but his athleticism and effort. Derek’s advanced skill and his knowledge and understanding of the game will transition well to the next level. Watch his stock skyrocket during his upcoming senior season.
