The high school basketball scene is unique in each respective state, but very few programs have to battle quite like Anderson Christian. What is it that makes this program so strange' Well, they have a total of 192 students in their entire K-12 system, which only seems to make their abilities on the hardwood that much more impressive. When asked about this unusual circumstance, coach Josh Brown replied, “There are about 55 kids in the high school, so if you’re a boy then you’re probably going to play basketball.” While somewhat funny off the cuff, it still doesn’t full encapsulate the bizarre context surrounding Anderson Christian. Furthermore, this team is actually talented and has multiple next-level prospects within their roster.

Things really start with 6’3 ’21 Xavier Thornton, the clear leader and ultimate decision-maker for this team. If Thornton struggles, it’s likely going to be evident across the board. However, the opposite is also true, as he’s capable of propelling his teammates up and translating that into team success. He’s a big, strong-bodied wing prospect with IQ, creation skills, and the ability to dictate the offensive action from all three levels. Thornton scores with efficiency while displaying unselfishness and a willingness to get others involved whenever possible. He also utilizes his frame very well to disrupt opponents on defense and as a rebounder. There should be no doubts about his abilities to advance to the next level.

That being said, it sounds like no one has even discussed 6’5 ’21 Bray Greer and his likelihood to make it to the collegiate ranks. Not only does he play way bigger than his size would imply as an interior piece, but Greer’s production is absolutely vital to this group. He’s a strong two-way rebounder with great instincts, positioning, and understanding of how to maximize his abilities around the basket. Geer doesn’t require a ton of offensive touches to find opportunities to make his presence felt. His nose for the ball is easily seen through hustle plays, rebounding prowess, and second-chance points. Greer is a quality cutter, strong athlete, and runs the floor very well in transition. His lack of size is actually somewhat of a benefit defensively, as it allows him to contain various types of opponents in a fluid, natural manner.

Add in guys like 6’0 ’21 Myles Ulmer and 6’2 ’23 Braxton Allmon among numerous others, and it’s easy to appreciate the early success Anderson Christian has found this season. Given the amount of kids in their school and within the basketball program, one has to step back and admire the efforts from the players and coaches. Only time will tell, but college coaches would be smart to give a hard look at this roster.
