It’s been nearly six years since Coach Patrick King transitioned into his head coaching role for Butler High School. Although the previous regime left him with big shoes to fill, he was more than prepared for the challenge. His first few seasons went as most rebuilding programs do. Following his first year, the Bulldogs improved their record in each of the next three seasons. Now, they are quietly shaping up as one of the more underrated squads in North Carolina. Let’s take a closer look…
Currently 15-7, this season has been somewhat of a roller coaster for the Bulldogs. They started of 9-0 with only three results being determined by single digits. However, the next stretch posed some problems. They still collected meaningful wins throughout the holiday season before hitting a brutal streak against North Meck, Queens Grant, and West Charlotte in consecutive games. After losing five of six, things began to look bleak. This group needed something to reignite their collective fire. That came in the form of back-to-back wins against West Charlotte and North Meck. Now, they’ll go into the final two games (Mallard Creek, Independence) with a bit more wind in their sails. Following up a 1-5 stretch with two massive wins to go 3-5 instead of 1-7 is simply massive.
In terms of overall structure, this team is extremely balanced. Terrance Badio has consistently stood out as the focal point and senior leader, averaging 16.8 PPG, 5.3 RPG, and 2.3 SPG. Ian Tomlinson has also provided a nice veteran presence as the only other senior in this rotation, averaging 9.1 PPG, 3.5 APG, and 1.4 SPG. That being said, the emergence of guys like Isaiah White and Elijah Shine has been critical to the success of this group. Although White had already previously established himself, it’s clear that he’s taken another step this season. He’s averaging 12.6 PPG, 6.8 RPG, and 1.8 SPG. Rounding out their core grouping, Shine has emerged as a valuable sophomore piece, averaging 10.9 PPG, 5.6 RPG, and 2.5 APG. The Bulldogs have proven themselves capable of competing with anyone and will be a legitimately frightening opponent come playoff time.
