Big Time Upside is Now Here
6’10 ’19 John Michael Mulloy (Carmel High School, Carmel, Indiana)
By Rick Lewis
John Michael Mulloy was one of the break out players at the 2nd Annual (2016) Indy Top 80 camp last year. The southpaw plays with a high motor combined with a developing skill set. We were impressed with his ability to score with his back to the basket and also his ability to step out and knock down perimeter shots. In our Indy Top 80 evaluation, we stated the following. “John Michael plays with a lot of energy. He is long and very athletic. He has great skill for his size and is very coach. John Michael has big time upside.”
In our post event coverage, we even stated, “John Michael Mulloy is long and active. He is a good athlete and carries a very unique skill set. He was able to push the break on defensive rebounds and got his team into sets. He shot the 3-point and even created off the bounce. There is a load of upside for the lefty.”
Mulloy currently sports offers from Miami of Ohio, Tulsa, Toledo, and Eastern Illinois. While the offer list is from mid majors, he is getting high major interest from Butler, Syracuse, Notre Dame, and Purdue. That being said, look for his recruitment to explode sooner rather than later. We’re talking about a talented and skilled 6’10 southpaw. While he does need additional upper body strength, it’s just a matter of time the high majors start offering. Without question, Mulloy has all the intangibles that are most important in someone at his size. In addition, he courts an impressive 3.96 cumulative unweight GPA.
Last season for Carmel, Mulloy almost averaged a double double. He averaged 10 PPG and 8.5 RPG, not to mention shooting a stellar 82% from the free throw line. The lefty has a soft and fluid shooting touch! In addition, Mulloy is a skilled passer out of the post area and is very patience. He doesn’t force things and is a willing passer, which can be seen, in his assist average of 2.5 APG.
Building upon the success of a terrific Indy Top 80 event last year and a outstanding high school season, Mulloy put it all together for Indy Spiece at Peach Jam. Over the five games, Mulloy averaged a double double against the best competition in the country. He averaged 12.4 PPG and 10.6 RPG. He hit 79% of his free throws (23-29) and even knocked down 3-4 three pointers during the five games.
This week, John Michael Mulloy is taking an unofficial visit to Syracuse and Butler next week. For many coaches, it will be the ability to see his upside and potential and where he will project down the road. For us at the Phenom Hoop Report, we strongly feel his time has arrived. What he currently offers as a player is something you simply cannot teach. He has length, skill, high IQ and a relentless motor on both ends of the court. In our opinion, his time has arrived.
