At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, hundreds of players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today’s edition will highlight Mikhail Pocknett of Flight 22 Prep.

We’ve seen Pocknett countless times over the years, previously stating, “It’s difficult to say anything that hasn’t already been mentioned, as Pocknett continues to dominate as a primary option for this squad. He’s a strong, mobile forward who thrives at securing rebounds, pushing the break, and consistently finishing around the basket. Pocknett can knock down the occasional jumper and understands how to set up others at a useful rate.” Later followed by, “There were a lot of notable contributors for Flight 22 Prep, which certainly includes Pocknett and everything he brought to the table. He’s a strong, versatile wing/forward prospect with an understanding of how to initiate the offense, get downhill, and create scoring opportunities for himself and others. Pocknett defends and rebounds his position effectively, displaying the ability to force turnovers, secure extra possessions, and convert second-chance opportunities.”

Although he’s always been a productive player regardless of setting, Pocknett has clearly taken a step forward during his time with Flight 22 Prep. He’s able to shine as a leader through his fairly versatile, well-rounded game. Pocknett naturally causes matchup problems with his blend of size, strength, and ball skills. He gets downhill with consistency, finishes around the basket, and sets up others at a quality rate. Pocknett rebounds his position well and is capable of pushing the break in transition and making proper decisions with the ball in his hands. He utilizes his body well defensively to play physically and force turnovers. Pocknett is able to do a lot of different things and operate in various different roles, so it’ll be interesting to see what program secures his commitment over the coming weeks.
