At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, hundreds of players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today’s edition will highlight Davis Wagner of Lake Norman High School.

Prior to the season, we wrote about Wagner as an underrated senior prospect, stating, It’s unclear how many (if any) folks really expected the Wildcats to go nearly undefeated during the weekend of NCHSAA play, but Davis Wagner continued to propel this group forward. Although talented, this Lake Norman roster doesn’t have a clear identity outside of Coach Hodges and their patented Riptide scheme. However, Wagner has been patiently waiting for his time to emerge. He’s now equipped to lead a team on both ends of the floor after playing up a level with the original Riptide since their founding. Wagner offers a strong interior presence, both as a finisher and rebounder, with the ability to space the floor at an efficient rate. He’s also a useful passer and rugged defender with a desire to do the dirty work whenever possible. Wagner should have opportunities arise over the coming months.”

Between the Wildcats’ overwhelming team success and Wagner’s clear status as a leader for this group, it’s unclear why he doesn’t hold any opportunities to play at the next level. He’s posting nightly averages of 11.3 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 1.5 SPG, and 1.9 BPG without even necessarily needing to be the primary offensive option. Wagner is tough, rugged, and shows zero fear of any opponent on the court, which makes him a natural tone-setter on either end of the floor. He’s a strong rebounder, finisher, and capable floor-spacer with a clear desire to make his presence felt on the glass. Wagner welcomes chippy, physical play—as it only plays to his individual strengths. For those who don’t remember, Wagner played up with the Carolina Riptide since their original group formed. He’s only continued to develop his game, body, and overall appeal as a next-level prospect. Wagner should have opportunities sooner than later.
