At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, over one hundred players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today’s edition will highlight Callahan Reed of Lake Norman Charter.

Last year, we featured Reed on our “Get to Know” series, where we stated, “Although Atwell was the leading scorer for the Knights, Callahan Reed deserves a ton of credit for his IQ, scoring, and playmaking from the point guard position. He’s a true floor general that seems to always catch opponents by surprise with his quickness, toughness, and overall craftiness as a creator. Reed’s effective shooting ability allows him to slide off-ball and play alongside another point guard quite seamlessly. His positioning and anticipation make him a reliable defender with the ability to force turnovers at a solid rate. Last season, Reed posted nightly averages of 10.4 PPG, 7.3 APG, 3.1 RPG, and 2.8 SPG. His numbers speak for themselves. Reed possesses the tools and ability to succeed at the next level, so it’ll be exciting to see which programs emerge over the next calendar year.”

Fast-forward to a year later, and Reed’s overall recruitment is still somewhat puzzling. He enjoyed a quality summer of play with the Carolina Riptide and maintained his impressive production going into the season as the leader for the Knights. In 14 games, Reed posted nightly averages of 16.1 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 5.9 APG, and 3.0 SPG with 48/41/69 shooting splits. Between his balance as a floor general and efficiency as a scorer, he should have a ton of schools vying for his services at the next level. Beyond his numbers as a leader, Reed has also shown the ability to thrive within a role and generate opportunities for his team on both ends of the floor. Though schools have been sluggish up to this point, expect Reed to find success wherever he ultimately decides to further his playing career.
