As we approach the high school season, there are countless exciting and intriguing subplots to follow. Whether it’s the departure of countless upperclassmen, the emergence of young prospects, or the fairly open landscape, folks should have plenty to track. Following the start of our fall league, several of these stories have already begun to unfold. Despite not being widely talked about, Statesville High School is a scrappy group with multiple pieces worth noting. Could they be a potential surprise for opponents this year' Let’s look at a few of their main guys…
6’0 ’28 Paul Cauthen
Despite being the youngest player on the roster, Cauthen returns as the clear, undisputed leader of this group. He’s a smart, crafty, well-rounded floor general who visibly sets the tone in all facets of the game. Cauthen displays excellent IQ, poise, and overall instincts with the ball in his hands. He mixes it up well as a scorer from all levels. Cauthen is a terrific penetrator who touches the paint a high volume, sets up others, and knocks down jumpers with consistency. He’s a reliable defender with the quickness and anticipation to force turnovers in the passing lanes. Cauthen plays hard, which allows him to make hustle plays and secure rebounds well for his size/position. He’s also shown increased explosiveness since my last viewing. In addition to what he brings on the court, Cauthen shines as a true leader who coaches and encourages his teammates on both ends of the floor. This team will ultimately go as far as Cauthen takes them.
5’7 ’26 Tymieer Smith
Though undersized, Smith brings a very valuable dynamic to this group. He’s a quick, crafty shot-maker with the ability to hit jumpers and attack off the bounce. Smith displays solid vision but is arguably at his best when applying pressure from beyond the arc. He offers a scrappy defensive presence and shows a willingness to make hustle plays. Expect his scoring punch to be vital to this group.
6’7 ’26 Jordan Williams
Given the lack of size on this roster, Williams will be key to the Greyhound’s success. He’s a strong, big-bodied post player who possesses overwhelming strength. Williams offers a steady interior presence on both ends of the floor. Built like a football player, he utilizes his massive frame to carve out space as a scorer and rebounder. He also deters opponents from entering the paint. Williams should play a valuable role.
