Every year, there are players that are labeled as “sleepers” or “late-bloomers.” One player of interest as of late has been 2022 6’7 Doug Smith from North Stanly. This is a young man that has seen a growth spurt and now stands as a long wing that excels out in the open floor.
Phenom Hoops has had multiple chances of viewing Smith, whether it was at the Rod Howard Select Media Day or recently at the Spring Tip-Off Classic, he has caught a few eyes and it hasn’t just been from scouts.
Most recently, Patrick O’Brien had this to say about Smith:
“Smith is an intriguing prospect to watch with his length, versatility, and athleticism. He is a skilled wing that excels in the open court and out in transition, finishing well at the rim but can step out as well.”
And when we spoke with him, he mentioned that he would best describe his game as a player that can rebound and run the floor, create good shots, and also be an impact in blocking shots. He also is continuing to work on finishing at the rim and playing both sides of the ball.
Though listed as a sleeper in NC, schools like Patrick & Henry, Albany State, and Huntington College have expressed some interest his way. But it will be interesting to see how Smith continues to elevate his game, along with his potential of still growing.
