I continue to bring you my thoughts on players around the country, as this is one of the newest segments where we talk and break down even more of players’ game. I look at players that I believe should be ones to watch more and could be big-time players in the making before they head to the next level. Continue to check back for even more player reviews, as this reflects my thoughts as a scout.

Player: Gabe Cupps
Class: 2023
Height: 6’2
School: Centerville
Committed to: Indiana
One player that I’ve watched a few times over the last few years has been 2023 point guard Gabe Cupps from Centerville HS (OH). One of the most recent times watching this young man operate was at the Chance Harman Classic back in January and then we caught up with the young man once again at the Adidas All-American camp in Rock Hill.
Each time I’ve viewed Cupps on the court, I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen. I’ve seen a play that plays a mature game, that controls the floor, and plays with a high IQ/great feel. In January, I had this to say:
“The junior point guard already committed to Indiana stole the show in this matchup, as he did what he want throughout. He plays with such a terrific feel with the ball in his hands, making plays, creating off the dribble, showing great touch on his release, and court awareness. He was big-time tonight and Indiana has themselves a good one coming in.”
And then going up against some of the premier talents in the country at the All-American camp, he displayed those same skills once again. Cupps is a terrific point guard that controls the game extremely well, one that plays at his own pace, creates extremely well off the dribble, and makes terrific decisions on the floor. Whether it is his court awareness, his change of pace, or his ability to create, Cupps just has a natural feel with the ball in his hands and is one that just makes the whole team go. That doesn’t even mention his shot-making ability on the court; he is able to get to his spots, has an elite pull-up game, and can be deadly from outside as well; just a smooth release with a ton of confidence.
That is why I think he is going to be a big steal for the Hoosiers. Cupps could be a game-changer for Indiana, knowing you have a point guard coming in that will be sure to control the game, get his teammates involved, and be a strong presence and leader with the ball in his hands. Watch out for Cupps, as I think he is going to be a name you hear a lot sooner rather than later when he gets into the Big 10.
