Jahn Hines 6’3 170 2020 Norview High School, Norfolk VA
I’ve been watching Jahn play for a few years and what impresses me most is how he continues to add new elements to his game and has really become as complete a player as one can be at this stage. Once a spot-up three-point shooter with a great touch and deep range, he added ball handling and the ability to create his own shot off the dribble. With increased bulk and strength he has added the ability to finish against contact making him a better scorer on a more creative ball handler. Jahn, always the ultimate team player has now begun to use that strength and added physicality to become a more active rebounder and his competitiveness has allowed him to welcome the challenge of being tasked with guarding bigger players and sometimes operate as a high post option. He has added so many nuances and worked hard on all aspects of his game and his body making himself available to his team as a multi-positional option and matchup nightmare on both ends of the floor.
Jahn can score in every way imaginable and from all levels, he’s a tactician! He spreads the floor as a deep ball threat and is very good attacking hard closeouts using jabs and shot fakes to create angles and attacking those angles with rangy strides and good quickness. He is so skilled using hesitations which, coupled with his quick stop and pop ability makes him difficult to defend. Jahn can stop on a dime and bury the pull-up jumper or get to the rim where he has become a very good finisher. He can flash into soft spots and hit catch and shoot jumpers demonstrating quick elevation and a quick release. Jahn can also catch, make a dribble move, drive and finish or use the dribble, and very good passing ability to find cutters and become an effective creator for teammates off the drive as well. As a high post option, he flashes and uses his length and long wingspan to provide a high target where he can front pivot and shoot the jumper or drive and finish. He’s very good using shot fakes and pivots and hits the fade-away jumper which is indefensible given his length. His patience and ability to score facing the rim or with his back to the basket makes him as complete an offensive weapon as there is in the 757!
His versatility extends to the defensive end where Jahn can guard anybody! He guards point guards and shooters, even post guys! He does a great job taking advantage of his combination of length and solid footwork and a good deal of quickness but what makes him so much more effective is his IQ and preparation; his ability before a dribble with a series of fakes, jabs, etc to get defenders at a disadvantage and then make a move and beat them. If anybody has all the tools and intangibles that translate to the college game its Jahn Hines! A fierce competitor, he doesn’t mind doing the dirty work battling inside or getting on the floor for loose balls but also a model teammate and person! He’s a must-see!!
