Mike Gminski Classic Presented by Sana Recovery
December 27, 29, 30 at Marvin Ridge High School
It’s no secret that mental health has become a major concern across the country—and it is impacting our own communities at an alarming rate. All of us know someone struggling. In some cases, these struggles lead to substance misuse, further compounding the challenges young people and families are facing.
Rising mental health concerns have contributed to decreased academic and professional performance, strained relationships, increased substance misuse, and, tragically, higher rates of suicide. Social support, early intervention, and quality counseling services have been proven to reduce these risks, and Sana Recovery Foundation is one of the local organizations working to meet this growing need.
One of our goals with this event is to bring greater awareness to mental health and substance misuse—issues that become even more pronounced during the holiday season. These concerns have become increasingly prevalent among today’s youth. Our community was reminded of this heartbreakingly recently with the loss of a Myers Park student-athlete to suicide, one of several cases over the past year.
Duke legend and 14-year NBA veteran Mike Gminski has been working with Sana Recovery Foundation founder Patrick Balsley to ensure no one in our community faces these challenges alone. We felt the timing was right to elevate this conversation and rebrand the New Year’s Bash as the Mike Gminski Classic presented by Sana Recovery Foundation.
Sana Recovery Foundation’s mission is to empower Charlotte’s recovery community through resource navigation, education, and family support services. The Foundation is committed to reducing barriers to care and ensuring that individuals and families have access to the guidance they need when confronting mental health or substance-related challenges.
Among the free services offered to the Charlotte community are resource navigation—helping individuals and families connect with the appropriate treatment, support, or recovery services—along with free weekly family support groups that provide education, connection, and a safe space for families impacted by a loved one’s mental health or substance misuse. The Foundation also provides community education initiatives aimed at reducing stigma, strengthening resilience, and promoting early intervention.
By highlighting the work of Sana Recovery Foundation at the Mike Gminski Classic, we hope to help more members of our community access these vital services and continue building a healthier, more connected Charlotte.
