Continuing to highlight teams heading into the season, a team that should have eyes more their way is Mallard Creek. Though they are coming off a 13-14 overall season, the Mavericks have shown early signs that they could be a team to contend with this upcoming season under the new coaching staff.
When watching them this summer at the Phenom Hoops Team Camp, Mallard Creek brought new energy but also a roster that has experience. Here is our breakdown from earlier this year of the Mavericks and what we saw on the court:
“When watching this team on the court, you could see a different type of energy. This group came to compete; they played well as a team and were getting it done on both sides of the ball. But what impressed us the most was the balance they offered. There were players, though, who stepped up and left a lasting impression on our scouts. 2026 Lajalin Overton was one of them, as the 6’6 rising senior brings physicality and athleticism, along with versatility in being able to finish at the rim as well as step out. However, players like Ahmaud Savage, Aiden Roberson, Connor McKissick, and others all brought tremendous energy to the court. They brought a balanced attack, shared the ball, looked deep as far as depth on the roster, and really got after it on both sides of the ball. Those were only a few of the players to name, as this looks like a deep roster. The Mavericks finished 4-0 at the event, winning in several ways. They were able to effectively score the ball with a balanced attack, and the new coaching staff seems to be bringing new energy to the court for this program.”
They have strong guard play, athleticism, and a strong overall balance with the roster they brought this summer, and I could easily see that carrying over with the new coaching staff. Again, what impressed the most was a new energy and drive on the court, competing on both sides of the court, sharing the ball, and having depth in several areas. The Mavericks have finished above .500 overall only twice in the last ten years, but there is a chance Mallard Creek could be much more in the mix this upcoming season.
