This past weekend, Phenom Hoops traveled out to Methodist College in Fayetteville, North Carolina, for our eighth annual Hoops and Dreams Showcase. The event returned to its original debut spot for a quality two-day stretch of basketball featuring many of the top local teams. Across the 14 games, there were several standouts, storylines, and meaningful takeaways that we will examine closer. Let’s start by taking a closer look at Hoggard’s scrappy collection of pieces…
Unlike so many teams, this group clearly understands its identity. They are a very tough, physical, well-coached squad that plays with phenomenal energy at all times. In a matchup where Hoggard was clearly overmatched physically, they put forth an impressive fight on both ends of the floor. They fronted the post, sent backside help, and scrapped for every loose ball or extra possession. Hoggard showed no fear and controlled the game for the majority of the first half before ultimately falling short. The two leading scorers combined for 40 of their 50 points.

Among those two leading scorers was Hunter McGrath, who shines as a major focal point for the Vikings. He dictates the action in a very smooth, poised manner. McGrath displays excellent pace with the ball in his hands, very rarely getting rushed or bothered by defensive pressure, and consistently makes smart decisions when attacking. He sees the floor very well as a playmaker, but also doesn’t hesitate to take advantage of available scoring opportunities. McGrath is a knockdown shooter, both from midrange and beyond the arc, yet still applies quality pressure as a penetrating threat. Although this team needs his on-ball ability, he’s more than capable of producing as a cutter and spot-up threat. McGrath defends with energy and rebounds well for his size/position.

Although his teammate above receives a ton of attention, Will Seward is definitely a name for college coaches to pursue. At 6-foot-6, he’s a long, skilled post player with a very reliable interior presence. Seward possesses a wiry build with a terrific combination of length, touch, and footwork. He finishes extremely well around the basket, showing the ability to score with both hands and effectively play through contact. Seward moves well without the ball to find open space, yet also appears comfortable operating on the block. He’s stronger and much tougher than initially meets the eye. Seward is a great rebounder who plays hard and positions himself well to secure second-chance opportunities. Again, he clearly has the tools and ability to play at the next level.
Additionally, guys like Lukas Batchelor, Porter Morgan, and Markell Murphy provide valuable minutes for this group. Batchelor offers nice size as a scrappy, high-motor forward who does the dirty work and fills in the gaps as needed. Morgan and Murphy stand out through their steady, unselfish, energetic nature on both ends of the floor. Each of these three contributes well within their respective roles.
