This upcoming Saturday, Phenom Hoops will travel to Carmel Christian School in Matthews, North Carolina, for our annual Carmel MLK Showcase. The one-day event will feature four games with plenty of intrigue throughout the slate. As teams enter the second half of their season, each game carries that much more weight. This will be one of the last stretches before the start of conference play, so any type of momentum is vital during this time. Let’s take a closer look, moving onto Butler and Queens Grant…

Although plenty of other individuals receive more attention, Coach King has done a terrific job since taking over the Butler program six seasons ago. In a time when every kid is determined to seek greener pastures, he’s done a great job of keeping guys like Terrance Badio, Isaiah White, Ian Tomlinson, and several other veteran pieces over the years. Badio currently shines as their all-around focal point while White has continually blossomed as a utility piece who can impact the game in several roles. Tomlinson stands out as a low-maintenance piece who produces within the flow of the action. That being said, Elijah Shine has also emerged as an x-factor on both ends of the floor. Add in guys like Stefan Ross and Kellan Worthy, and this group certainly has the personnel to perform at a high level.

On the other side, Queens Grant has found its stride after somewhat of a surprising start to the season. After opening the year 4-3, they’ve rattled off 14 straight wins behind this incredibly young, talented core of pieces. Even with no senior leaders, Coach Badgett has this group absolutely rolling. The sophomore trio of Chase Smith, Mekhi Allen, and Bobby Montgomery carries a sizable load. Smith is a skilled, physically imposing post player with feel, touch, and inside-out ability. Allen continues to highlight the makings of a potential star prospect. Montgomery is a knockdown shooter with IQ, range, vision, and the ability to heat up in a hurry. The junior pairing of Preston Scott and Cannon DeBerry makes a massive impact as well. Scott is basically the leader by example, setting the tone through his smart, unselfish playmaking and rugged defensive presence. DeBerry stands out as a tough, physical athlete who finishes, rebounds, and blocks shots. Ethan McSweeney also provides solid minutes for this squad. Given the success both teams have enjoyed, expect this to be an entertaining contest.
