As the high school basketball season across North Carolina continues to heat up, Class 7A has quickly emerged as one of the state’s most competitive and talent-rich classifications. From seasoned contenders with championship expectations to surging programs finding their stride at the right time, the title race is beginning to take shape. With league play intensifying and postseason implications growing by the week, Phenom Hoops takes a closer look at the teams positioning themselves for deep playoff runs — and the programs that could shake up the landscape as the race for a state title unfolds.

Top 3 Title Contenders:

North Meck 16-3
Southern Durham 17-3
Cardinal Gibbons 17-2

Could Make a Title Run:

Marvin Ridge 15-4
Mooresville 15-2
New Hanover 14-5
Southwest Guilford 14-3
Lumberton 15-2

Others to Watch:

Independence 11-8
Butler 13-8
Hickory Ridge 13-5
Knightdale 13-6
Sanderson 13-7
New Bern 15-3

This is such an interesting classification to watch here in North Carolina. In my opinion, the three title contenders have proven themselves so far this season. North Meck is a proven winner, and there is no surprise to see them back in the mix as one of the favorites to win it all; they have the talent again to do so. Southern Durham has a three-headed monster, along with other talent to take home a title, and that could easily be seen even before the season started. Cardinal Gibbons may be one of the surprises, but they have racked up some impressive wins, and one of their losses was to FCDS, a very talented team in NC. These three have clearly made a statement so far this season.

But again, what makes this classification so intriguing is the number of teams that I believe could make a run. Marvin Ridge has balance and depth, as they have put themselves right in the mix. Mooresville is another one that has talented guard play and can be a force. New Hanover is right back in the mix with their three-headed monster as well and certainly know what it takes to win. SW Guilford has talented guard play, Lumberton continues its winning ways, and there are other teams listed in “Others to Watch” that have shown they can put together wins against strong teams.
