Leading up to the graduation of Lavar Batts in 2017, Jay M. Robinson had a three-year stretch of pure dominance. They were one of the most exciting programs across North Carolina but quickly fell out of relevance after the departure of their star and unquestioned leader. The following season, the Bulldogs were able to scratch and claw their way to a solid 14-13 record. Since then, it’s been almost all downhill. For what it’s worth, Jay M. Robinson hasn’t been necessarily overflowing with young, on-the-rise talent, either. However, things are starting to turn around for the Bulldogs, given their early success and productive two-way captain in Daevin Hobbs.

This should come as no surprise, considering all the extended flashes of dominance he displayed during the summer with NLPB. At 6-foot-6, Hobbs can legitimately affect all facets of the game and cause mismatches for opposing wing/forwards. He’s more fluid and skilled than majority of players his size and physically overwhelming for smaller opponents. Hobbs can set up the offense, create for himself and others, and score efficiently from all three levels. He possesses the IQ and versatility to take advantage of offensive opportunities with relative ease. Additionally, Hobbs stands out as a terrific two-way rebounder with excellent positioning, timing, and anticipation around the basket. He utilizes his body well to absorb contact and finish with either hand. Hobbs can also make his presence felt in transition, both with and without the ball in his hands, and can effectively set up others as a playmaker. He also has clear defensive upside, but already forces turnovers through sheer instincts and understanding.

The appeal should already be fairly obvious but add in a slew of impressive performances through nine games and Hobbs is already a prospect worth the attention of college coaches. Assuming he stays at Jay M. Robinson as their leader, he will only continue to improve while becoming more productive over time. It’s still somewhat early for the Class of 2023, but Hobbs will be worth monitoring over the foreseeable future.
