Jason Porter wraps up his weekend with five more players that impressed.

CP3 Live period is underway in Winston Salem this weekend and as a result a ton of talent has descended onto the Triad. Over the next few days I will be bringing you a few of the standouts from the field. Reviews are as follows:

Salen Streater, 5’10 2020 G at Monroe HS – small quick guard who can move up and down the court while working in and out of traffic. He has nice handles, can go off the bounce, and shows the range on the jumper you’d like to see as well. He has a tendency to over dribble at this point and will need to be quicker in his reads and decision making process. A rising freshman it will be interesting to see which way he turns out.

Derek Young 6’2 2020 F at Union HS – Strong young forward is good on both the offensive and defensive the glass at this point of his development. He is a good defender inside and is a decent athlete as well. He is limited on his offense at this time to putbacks and in close shots but he shows good instincts going to the ball and is not afraid to go up through the trees to convert. His free throws need work as does his offensive game in general but there is enough here to warrant a look in for his development.

Mekai Collins, 5’10 2020 G at Cedar Ridge HS – Mekai is an active scorer who knows how to get down the floor and hit the holes in a defense. Like a lot of young score first guards he can tend to be a bit too zeroed in on this side of the ball and will force some things but I still love the aggression and attacking nature on the offensive end. Collins also shows to be able to create for others out on the floor when he keeps his eyes down the floor as he threw out a few nice assists on the game I saw. I need to see more on the defensive end from him as well as better shot selection but that should develop over time. Also need to see his motor and how he carries himself on the floor improve as well going forward. Scorers are always needed and he has the makings of being just that.

Carter Whitt, 5’9 2021 G at Trinity of Raleigh – Carter is a very advanced player for his age. Playing up a grade and with CP3 no less he proved to be one of the better and more consistent players in the field this weekend. He shows a great understanding of the game and how to run a team. His head and eyes are always up and searching the floor on the offensive attack and he can spring the break with great quick reads. Carter is a very sound scorer as well who understands how and when to pick his spots. Only a rising 8th grader he can already play and start for a lot of the HS teams in the state. Kid is already a stud in his class and if he keeps this up will be a national name before long.

Christian Martin, 6’3 2019 W at SW Guilford HS – Had heard good things on this kid but it was not until day 3 that I got to watch him go. What I saw was a young wing with a good body and a tough glue guy type game to him. He does a little bit of everything really well out on the floor and plays with a good motor but does not jump out in any one area. He is a very capable scorer when he wants but does not need the ball in his hands to be effective. SW Guilford is loaded with guards this coming year so minutes and shots will be limited but given his skill set he should be able to find his way to the floor and contribute before stepping into a larger role down the road.

Until next time, see you in the gym!
