Playing at Oak Hill, you are going to get the national attention, and last year, 2020 Cam Thomas was that dude. This young man was an absolute scoring machine at Oak Hill, averaging 31.5 points, six rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, leaving as the program’s all-time leading scorer and posted nine 30-plus point games last year.
To put it simply; he was an absolute beast and was one of the best scorers to lace them up for Oak Hill, who you know, has a rich history.
So why would anyone doubt that he wouldn’t bring the same to LSU as a freshman? Of course, it is still early in the season and the competition will get better, along with just getting over the hump of learning to play at the next level. However, Thomas has shown early on that he has the potential to continue to be one of the best scorers in the country, as the 6’4 guard is off to a great start.
He is simply wired different.
To start the season, he is averaging 22.3 points per game, shooting 48.3 percent from the floor, 40 percent from three while averaging three 3-pointers a game, and also adding 2.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.
Those are pretty impressive numbers early on and gives you a clear picture of how Thomas operates. And, even though it may be tough to keep those numbers up throughout the year after teams earn more game film and entering conference play, don’t look past Thomas’ ability and mentality to be a bucket.
Back in high school, Thomas had this to say to Rivals.com:
“I bring scoring ability…I watch Kobe Bryant and here and there I watch Devin Booker, but mainly I watch Kobe. That is where I basically get all my moves and I try to keep that “Mamba Mentality” like him.”
That mentality and game that he had in high school have quickly translated well early on at LSU and it seems that Cam Thomas is going to be a name you hear often in the SEC, so get ready for a show.
