The Phenom Team Camp is always a tremendous opportunity for our scouts to get an early look at what teams may have to offer this upcoming season. We were able to learn a lot about several teams, including a few teams that may be ones to watch out for more this season.

One team that quickly grabbed our attention was Mallard Creek, a program that came off a 13-14 overall record last year. The Mavericks had an up-and-down type of season throughout, just coming up short of finishing .500 overall and in conference play. But from what we saw at the event, they could be trending in the right direction, as the new coaching staff looks to make their mark this season.

When watching this team on the court, you could see a different type of energy. This group came to compete; they played well as a team and were getting it done on both sides of the ball. But what impressed us the most was the balance they offered.

There were players though that stepped up and left a lasting impression on our scouts. 2026 Lajalin Overton was one of them, as the 6’6 rising senior brings physicality and athleticism, along with versatility in being able to finish at the rim as well as step out. However, players like Ahmaud Savage, Aiden Roberson, Connor Mckissick, and others all brought tremendous energy to the court. They brought a balanced attack, shared the ball, looked deep as far as depth on the roster, and really got after it on both sides of the ball.  Those were only a few of the players to name, as this looks like a deep roster.

The Mavericks finished 4-0 at the event, winning in several ways. They were able to effectively score the ball with a balanced attack, and the new coaching staff seems to be bringing new energy to the court for this program.  Now, time will only tell how far this team will be able to go, but from what we saw on the court down in Rock Hill (SC), the Mavericks are hoping to take a step forward and make a bit more noise this upcoming high school season.
