Now that we’ve reached the point in the high school season when things begin to shift. Despite all the preseason competition, holiday showcases, and subplots throughout, this time is arguably as exciting as any period in the year. Each game has playoff implications. All kinks should be figured out, and teams should be hitting their stride. However, this is also the stretch when young prospects really begin to emerge and separate themselves from their peers. Although the state is filled with intriguing young talent in every area, it feels like Royce Perkins should be warranting more attention for his all-around identity. Let’s take a closer look…
Salisbury has quietly been one of the top public-school programs in North Carolina over the recent years. Currently 13-5, they are a tough, battle-tested group consistently led by veteran pieces. However, Perkins has broken the mold by being the first varsity freshman on the roster in over three years. He’s currently averaging 12.4 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 3.8 APG, and 2.6 SPG for the Hornets.
He’s a true floor general with a high IQ, unselfish approach, and the ability to consistently create for himself and others. Perkins already possesses a strong frame and the understanding of how to run a team without necessarily needing to score. He’s more than capable of applying pressure as a penetrator, touching the paint, and finishing through contact or converting floaters at a solid rate. Perkins is very poised with the ball in his hands, displaying a calm demeanor and not allowing himself to get sped up by defenders. On the other end, he stands out as a scrappy, reliable defender who offers a tough, physical approach at the point of attack. Perkins also rebounds his position well and knows how to effectively push the break in transition. Given all the way he impacts the game, folks should expect him to be a focal point for Salisbury over the coming years.
