Years ago, it would have been tough to imagine a young freshman lead the charge for a high school program but the days have changed since then.
When you take an early look at the 2023 class in North Carolina, it is an impressive list early on and is shaping up to be a good one… there is no doubt about that.
One of the premier talents in the class is 5’11 Aden Holloway at Covenant Day. Holloway has already earned big-time recognition from fans around the state as well as an offer from an ACC program. And if you had to describe Holloway’s game in one word, that word has to be scorer.
Holloway put on a show at the Carmel MLK Showcase in front of Phenom Hoops, going for 29 points vs. Myers Park. It was just a small glimpse of what Holloway did all season long, as the freshman averaged 19.3 points per game this season.
And his season numbers were impressive all throughout:
19.3ppg / 47% from the floor/ 42% from three/ 3.3 assists/ 3.1 rebounds / 1.6 steals
In speaking with Covenant Day head coach Marty Parrish, he had some big words about his star freshman this season as he got the full picture of just how special Holloway is at an early age.
“He is a special young man,” Parrish said. “On the court, he exceeded expectations and endeared himself to our school community in a way that no player before him ever has. Beyond that, and more exciting for me, he showed me that gym rats aren’t extinct. He showed me that high-major talent and high-major character can co-exist. He sets himself apart in the way he loves his teammates.
He proved he can play either guard position effectively. He can bring the point guard mentality or he can play off the ball and score in bunches. He also showed multi-level scoring ability. He improved defensively as the season went on, his understanding of team defense grew exponentially. I believe he proved himself as a national talent, capable of fitting into any game anywhere.”
As we mentioned above, Holloway is already catching the attention of coaches around the country, earning an offer from Syracuse. But he has also been earning early interest from schools like Texas A&M, Louisville, Michigan, and Wake Forest, all of which are just expressing early interest.
But when you talk about a freshman sensation, Holloway certainly has entered his name into that category along with a few others in the state. One thing Holloway did show is that he knows how to score the ball at an elite level and will be a big-time prospect in the coming years.
