Christ School Upsets Charlotte Christian

1st Quarter 2nd Quarter 3rd Quarter 4th Quarter
Christ School 13 28 38 52
Charlotte Christian 18 22 29 45

Charlotte Christian came into the contest with an overall 27-1 record and nationally ranked status. On the otherhand, Christ School came in with a 15-12 record, but now enjoyed the services of nationally ranked prospect 6’10 junior Justice Ajogbor who has been injured for the majority of the season. While Christ School came in with the least impressive win/loss record, they had one of the more dangerous lineups of any team in the state.

Charlotte Christian picked a bad day to have a “bad day.” On paper, Christ School has plenty of talent and it was on full display against Charlotte Christian. Trailing 18-13 at the end of the first quarter, Christ School went on a 15-4 run in the second quarter and never looked back. Senior point guard Kojack Thompson used his superior quickness and speed in the front court with dribble penetration while 6’10 Justice Ajogbor controlled the paint. Thompson finished with 13 points all with drives to the rim. On the other hand, Ajogbor only scored four points, but got double digit rebounds and an unofficial eight blocked shots, not to mention dozen of intimidations in the defensive paint.

In speaking with head coach Jeff Depelteau of Christ School, he stated the following. “We were really focused on both ends of the court, but it was our game plan to challenge every shot and make Charlotte Christian work for every shot.” Christ School’s athleticism and pressure defense got Charlotte Christian out of sync after the first quarter, perimeter shots were not falling and it 'looked like their was a lid on the basket for them. That being said, give credit where credit is due, Christ School controlled the boards and their length gave Charlotte Christian problems in the paint. On a day with the perimeter shots weren’t falling, Charlotte Christian struggled to establish any rhythm offensively and that was due to the length and shot blocking ability of Justice Ajogbor. 'Charlotte Christian finishes with a 27-2 record and an impressive season. Christ School now has won five games in a row and has all the pieces to win the NCISAA 4A state championship. One thing is for certain, they are definitely peaking at the right time.
