Last Night, Phenom Hoops had the opportunity to check out Carmel Christian Vs Davidson Day.  The Head Honcho (Rick Lewis) and myself were in the gym to see a massive win for Davidson Day as they handled a nationally ranked Carmel Christian team with relative ease in a 63-47 win on senior night.  6’9 2020 CJ Huntley of Davidson Day had an incredible performance, in front of the right people.  Davidson, Charlotte, UNC Greensboro, Liberty, and Bucknell were all watching along while he had a performance for the ages.  Let’s take a look at Huntley’s performance last night, and his prospect profile as a whole.

A Modern Skillset For A Modern Game

Huntley brings a high level of versatility to the table as a big man, which is something coaches of all levels are looking to put on the court in 2019.  At 6’9 he possesses a wiry frame that allows him to move around the court like a wing, run the court with a high motor, and protect the rim as a defensive anchor.  3 Point shooting aside, Huntley has what it takes to be an effective modern big, while not straying away from the old school things coaches want their big men to do like setting good screens, rebounding the ball, and taking efficient shots.  Every college coach in attendance left impressed with what Huntley brings to the table as a defensive anchor, he already holds offers from High Point, Charlotte, and James Madison.

The Ability to Stretch the Floor

Huntley went 4/5 from deep against Carmel Christian which is promising for a couple of different reasons.  Anytime you have a big that can shoot the ball from deep at that high of a clip it’s an asset to any team, and it makes him an incredibly intriguing prospect.  It’s also important to note that just because he got hot from the perimeter, he didn’t fall in love with the shot.  Understanding time, place, and situation is always important for a young player, and Huntley showed that he has a great understanding for the game, he seems to be a joy to coach, and should see his recruiting profile build as he continues to build on this performance as we get into the High School Playoffs and Travel Ball Season.  Huntley finished with 19 Points, 6 Rebounds, and 3 Blocks on the night against a nationally ranked opponent in an upset win, which in my eyes, is a whole lot better than getting 40 against a bunch of nobodies.  Huntley will be one to watch in NC’s 2020 class moving forward.
