West Charlotte 6 22 39 52
Vance 10 21 34 49

Phenom Hoop Report travelled to Charlotte, North Carolina to cover a key matchup between between two of Charlotte top teams in the NCHSAA 4A I-Meck conference. West Charlotte entered the contest with a 8-2 conference record and 14-5 overall record. On the other hand, Vance is sitting one game behind West Charlotte in conference play with a 7-3 record and 16-3 overall record. Vance jumped out to an early 10-6 first quarter lead, but trailed 22-21 entering the half. West Charlotte gained momentum in the second half and eventually took a 39-34 leading heading into the final quarter. West Charlotte stretched the lead by eight (48-40) with less than three minutes remaining before Vance went on a 9-2 run to pull the game within one (50-49) but 6’8 senior Patrick Williams hit two key free throws and allowed West Charlotte to pull out the key road win at rival Vance High School. Now, let’s take a closer look at the top players of the game.

6’8 2019 Patrick Williams (West Charlotte0

It was just another All-American type performance for the 6’8 “point forward.” Williams finished with another double double of 25 points, 10 rebounds, blocked four shots, but more importantly, he altered many more. First of all, Patrick Williams simply makes the game look easy and his points always comes within the framework of the game. We continue to be impressed with his overall basketball IQ, maturity and poise. More importantly, he’s such a complete player on both ends of the court. He’s going to defend, rebound, block shots, and simply make plays.

6’6 2022 Josiah Dow (West Charlotte)

One thing is for certain, you never have to coach effort with Josiah Dow. We are so impressed with his relentless approach on both ends of the court. Wherever the ball is, be rest assured Josiah Dow is going to “at or near the ball.” Dow finished with 11 points and numerous hustle plays that continue to grab our attention. His work ethic translates and whether he is scoring in double digits or not, you always notice him, which is not often the case with many young prospects.

6’3 2019 Ralph Black (Vance High School)

Ralph Black has a sweet looking floater that he ulitized often in the game vs. West Charlotte. Black finished with 12 points, but he just does a little bit of everything. He rebounds extremely well for his size/position, defends, and has really quick lateral moment. On the offensive end of the court, Black has the ability to create for his teammates as well as himself. Although Vance came up a tad short in the heartbreaking losss to West Charlotte, Black enjoyed a solid all around game that should garnish the interest of regional D2 schools.

5’10 2019 Brandon Beidleman (Vance High School)

Brandon Beidleman is such a tough, gritty, aggressive and attacking point guard. He has tremendous speed and quickness in the open court and is very crafty especially in the half court, not to mention he is so clever in drawing contact and fouls. Beidleman finished with 12 points but we were impressed with the leadership displayed down the stretch. Although, Vance trailed 48-40 in the final minutes of the game, he stepped up and provided a spark on offense and defense.

6’5 2020 Daniel Ransom (Vance High School)

Daniel Ransom finished with a triple double, He had 11 points and 11 rebounds and double digit hustle plays throughout the game. Talk about a workhorse in the paint area. He is constantly battlling for position going “inside out” in his game. Ransom has a tremendous basketball frame with extremely long arms. In addition, Ransom just has impeccable basketball instincts. He has a nose for the ball and if the ball doesn’t find him, you can bet he will somehow find the ball. Ransom just picked up a Western Carolina offer and look for his stock to pick up steam. College coaches are going to absolutely love the way this young man plays.

Observations

6’8 Patrick Williams continues to impress with his “quiet” ability to get a double double. Believe it or not, Williams had a “quiet” 25 points but his poise and maturity are simply advanced and beyond his years. While both teams have veteran senior players, the cupboard isn’t bare for either West Charlotte or Vance. West Charlotte has 6’6 2021 Josiah Dow and 6’1 2022 Marcus Magness to build the program around for many years to come. For Vance, 6’5 Danile Ransom is an absolute stud on both ends of the court, but we were also impressed with 6’6 freshman Daniel Sanford.

West Charlotte has now gone on the road and picked up two huge NCHSAA 4A I-Meck wins over rivals North Mecklenburg and Vance. If Patrick Williams can continue to dominant both ends of the court as he has been doing, watch out. Vance is going to look back at this game and know this is a game they could have and should have won. They didn’t shoot efficiently from the 3-point line or even more important from the free throw line, not to mention a few missed bunnies near the rim. That being said, they will be a tough, tough out once the playoffs begin. Don’t be surprised if they make a nice little run.
