Find all the evaluations from the Virginia Top 80
The Virginia Top 80 is the most prestigious showcase camp in the state. In this annually held camp, we utilize scouts, coaches, and programs to help us identify the 80 best players Virginia has to offer. Virginia is traditionally a basketball hotbed, and that tradition is not slowing down anytime soon.
Phenom Hoops likes to provide a platform for every kid that supports our events, so here is a write up for each kid in attendance.
Virginia Top 80 – Team 6
Head Coach: Craig Dawson (Woodberry Forest)
#5 5’10” 2017 Johquin Wiley – LC Bird (Richmond)
Not only did Wiley impress with his attitude, but he also impressed with his ability to make positive plays happen. He is a quick and sturdy point guard, who defends the ball and attacks the rim. Wiley’s Camp Coach Craig Dawson stated, “Johquin is a crafty and heady point guard. He knows how to run a team.” While we love his competitive edge, as Wiley continues to improve we would like to see him continue to develop his jump shot more.
#6 5’10” 2016 Justin Chicot – Portsmouth Christian (Portsmouth)
Chicot came into camp with a great attitude and a leader’s demeanor. He scored his best marks on the offensive side of the ball, with his handle and attacking mind. Chicot’s Camp Coach Craig Dawson stated, “Justin is a great kid and a very good team mate. He also carried a high level motor throughout the day.” As Chicot continues to improve, we would like to see him continue to expand the range on his jump shot.
#10 6’ 2016 Robert Jenkins, Jr. – Atlee HS (Mechanicsville)
Jenkins had a great attitude throughout camp. He worked hard in the drills and accepted coaching throughout the day. Jenkins showed a quick first step getting into the lane and scored his best marks defending the perimeter. Jenkins’ Camp Coach Craig Dawson stated, “Robert worked extremely hard all day. He is a great team mate and defended well.” As Jenkins continues to improve we would like to see him pay more attention to the finer aspects of the game.
#26 6’2” 2016 Bryan Hart – Hampton Roads Academy (Hampton)
Hart’s attitude was infectious throughout the day. He seemed to always be smiling and have players around him having a good time. Hart’s Camp Coach Craig Dawson stated, “Bryan is a good kid, easy to coach. He really needs to focus on his shot selection, but you can see the potential there.” To reiterate what Coach Dawson stated, as Hart moves forward we would like to see Hart reign in his shot selection.
#39 6’3” 2017 Terrence Whitfield – Matoaca (Chesterfield)
Whitfield came into camp with a great attitude and a high motor. He showed to be a high level defender with great instincts, quickness, and use of angles. Whitfield’s Camp Coach Craig Dawson stated, “Terrence was one of my favorites, he plays great defense, he is unselfish, and he talks.” While Whitfield is an athletic scorer in the lane, we would like to see him continue to develop his jump shooting range as he continues to grow.
#42 6’4 2018 Keldon Johnson – Park View HS (Sterling)
Johnson experienced a break out of sorts, during camp. His size and skill set are elite for a freshman and his bloodlines (brother Kaleb going to Georgetown) are great. Johnson’s Camp Coach Craig Dawson stated, “Keldon took a lot of shots, but his skill set is high. He has a pure shooting stroke.” We are eager to watch Johnson progress as the sky is the limit here.
#48 6’5” 2016 Richard Washington – Walsingham Academy (Williamsburg)
Washington showed up a little late to camp due to AAU practice, but he certainly commanded the respect of campers the second he walked into the gym. Washington, a lefty, is a pure shooter with great size and length. Washington’s Camp Coach Craig Dawson stated, “Richard has a great skill set. It was obvious his team mates liked him and he can shoot the ball.” As Washington continues to grow we would like to see him work on his strength and being a more dynamic scorer toward the rim.
#72 6’8” 2017 Aamir Sims – Blue Ridge School (St George)
Sims was one of the five best performers in camp. Not only is he very talented, but he works very hard and takes well to coaching. Sims Camp Coach Craig Dawson stated, “Aamir has big time talent. While he has a tendency to drift on the perimeter, he has good low post moves. Aamir has an excellent shooting stroke.” While Sims is still young and figuring it out, it is easy to see all the talent that is in there. Keep an eye on this one.
#81 6’9” 2017 Ejike Obinna – Virginia Academy (Ashburn)
Walking through the door, Obinna sticks out. He is a big kid with a long frame, but what really stood out about Obinna throughout the camp was his attitude and coachability. Obinna’s Camp Coach Craig Dawson stated, “I would take Ejike on my team any day. He was the most coachable kid on any team. Ejike is a great post defender, a very hard worker, and battled for every rebound. He improved every game.” As Obinna continues to develop, we would like to see him continue to develop his offensive post game and footwork.
#82 6’6” 2017 Jyles Webster – LC Bird (Richmond)
Webster has a great attitude and a great motor around the paint. He showed to be a high energy defender off the ball and a productive rebounder, in and out of his area. Webster’s Camp Coach Craig Dawson stated, “Jyles played within himself. He battled on every rebound and is a very unselfish team mate.” As Webster continues to grow we would like to see him develop his lateral quickness and shooting range more.
