At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, over fifty players from South Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today’s edition will highlight Robert Nastase of Clover High School.

With the way basketball has trended over the last decade, the 3-and-D archetype has become increasingly valuable. Fortunately for Nastase, that’s exactly what he brings to the table as an under-the-radar wing prospect. He has a big, strong body and despite a somewhat unassuming demeanor, Nastase is a definite gamer. His motor and nose for the ball naturally allows him to make hustle plays within the flow of the game. However, Nastase also poses a major scoring threat with his perimeter shooting. He is a lethal spot-up threat with capabilities to take opponents off the dribble and make plays for himself or others. Nastase is an effective defender against all types of opposing wings and simply possesses a terrific overall feel for the game.

We’ve seen Nastase excel at numerous camps, including our most recent North Carolina Phenom 150, where we stated: Next, we look at a player that consistently stands out with his phenomenal perimeter shooting and seamless 3-and-D ability, Robert Nastase. He’s a smart, strong-bodied wing prospect that simply knows how to make his presence felt in all facets of the game, despite not being an incredible athlete. Nastase displays a high IQ, unselfish/team-first mentality, and makes an abundance of positive plays for his team on both sides of the ball. Next in his development process is working to become quicker, as it would make him a more lethal penetrating threat. Coach Jones on Nastase: “Robert has a very good feel for the game and can really space the floor with his exceptional shooting ability and timely cuts to the basket. His IQ for the game is very good on defense as well as offense. His areas of improvement would be in athleticism and on-ball defense. His foot speed could also get better but his help defense is very good and timely. Robert plays hard and is a tough competitor that will fit in many offensive systems.” Nastase was impressive throughout camp and continues to solidify himself as an obvious college-level prospect, so hopefully coaches will get involved before it’s too late.”

Last season, Nastase was very productive as a focal point for the 19-9 Clover Blue Eagles and has shown the ability to seamlessly fit alongside almost any collection of teammates. His low-maintenance role should have college coaches buzzing, especially for a player that encapsulates such a modernized role, and could become a contributor for a variety of programs at the next level.
