This weekend, Phenom Hoops will be hosting events in three different locations. Between the Freedom 828 Showcase, Ish Smith Showcase, and Tourney Town Showcase, there’s a ton of quality hoops throughout North Carolina. Now with the season fully underway, folks have a clearer understanding surrounding the “who’s who” in the high school scene. Each event brings its own set of storylines, matchups, and notable prospects on display. Let’s take a closer look at each, moving onto the Phenom 828 Showcase…
Kicking off the first boys’ game of the event, East Lincoln looks to remain undefeated as it enters a highly anticipated matchup against East Rutherford. Despite losing a few key seniors, the Mustangs haven’t skipped a beat. However, East Rutherford is clearly trending upward as a balanced squad with a lot of legitimate contributors. Considering the Cavaliers have only lost one game, this should be an incredibly important contest for both sides.
Taking a closer look at East Lincoln proves that they have no shortage of talent. Jaxon Dollar remains one of the top multisport athletes and basketball players in North Carolina’s Class of 2027. He continues to be critical to the Mustangs’ success through his combination of defense, rebounding, playmaking, and athleticism. Grant Lawless returns as a veteran leader who offers a strong interior presence with size, vision, and rebounding instincts. Gage Ikard has visibly expanded his production from last season. That being said, Christian Atkins is shining as a focal point for this squad, averaging 23.7 PPG on insane efficiency across the board. The Mustangs certainly have a slew of quality pieces.
On the other side, East Rutherford is led by a nice collection of upperclassmen. Freshman Aiden Thomas is their most productive young prospect, finding success through his activity on the glass and finishing ability around the basket. However, guys like Blake Suttle, Andre Staley, and Micah King stand out as the primary trio for this squad. Suttle leads the team in scoring and rebounding. He’s a long, wiry forward with a high motor and useful inside-out ability. Staley provides a well-rounded presence from the guard position, displaying the ability to create or play without the ball and find scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, King is a senior leader who stands out through his all-around identity and two-way leadership. He dictates the action as the main creator while consistently impacting all facets of the game. This should be a battle.
