What a great event. There was so much talent in the gym. The great part about this event is that our team spends the entire out, going around the state hand picking the field. We set the teams and the match ups, and we give everyone the opportunity to be seen by the countless scouts in attendance.
This NC Top 80 event was no different. The big named 5 star players who carry multiple power 5 offers shined, but so did some unranked kids with no offers.
With so much talent in the gym, these were the 5 players who stood out the most in my eyes.
6’2” Sophomore Devon Dotson
Providence Day School (Charlotte)
Dotson came into camp with a high reputation and did nothing to downplay any of lofty expectations. In fact, Dotson enhanced his status in in the eyes of many, going at every match up with confidence and a chip on his shoulder. Dotson is a dog, he attacks you on both ends, and he is a natural leader who sets the tone for his team. Already with offers from the likes of UNC, Clemson, Virginia Tech, and many others expect that list to grow to a nationwide feel. Also, don’t be surprised if he is listed as a 5-star soon.
6’7” Junior JP Moorman
Greensboro Day School (Greensboro)
What a transformation Moorman has made over the last year. He has grown from 6’5” and pudgy to 6’7” and lean. He went from a crafty below the rim type, to a highly explosive rim bender. And the scary thing is, Moorman is just now starting to scratch the surface. There is a lot more growth in there, as he continues to get better each time out. Moorman has excellent vision, a tightening handle, and always seems to be around the ball. As he continues to grow as a play, watch out. Moorman is a Top 100 player, who already carries offers from Virginia Tech, Richmond, USF, and others.
6’6” Junior John Meeks
The Burlington School (Burlington)
Maybe no one made more of a name for themselves this weekend that John Meeks. Already highly ranked by Phenom Hoops, many hadn’t seen him before. Meeks, a highly academic kid, showed ability as a power wing type. He shot the ball at a high clip, finished high above the rim (caught multiple bodies throughout the day), and attacked the basket in the half court set. Meeks is the best player on his high school team, a team that has gone 55-1 over the last 2 years. Expect a giant leap for him this summer, as he current has no offers. That will change.
6’4” Freshman Josh Nickelberry
Northwood Temple (Fayetteville)
What a day for Nickelberry. Not as highly ranked as a few other players in North Carolina’s loaded 2019 class, Nickelberry performed better than all of them in this setting. He is a smooth guard, who can take it off the bounce or shoot the ball with great form. He is long, a good athlete, and supremely confident in himself. Nickelberry is tracking as a highest level type recruit.
6’4” Sophomore Andy Pack
Northern Guilford (Greensboro)
The upward trajectory of Pack has been steep. Some analysts watching from the sidelines on Sunday suggested that Pack reminded them of Virginia commit Kyle Guy. Now Guy is a McDonalds All American, but Pack’s game style isn’t far off from Guy’s. Pack has a very skilled approach, wrapped it all in a strong and explosive frame. This year, he averaged 20 points (50% FG) and 6 boards per game. He only continues to get better, expect the offers to start coming soon and he will end up a hot commodity come his senior year.
