Trey Wertz
In the two games at the Phenom Hoops National HS Showcase, 6’5 ’18 Trey Wertz averaged 21 PPG. However, it was his timely free throw shooting down the stretch in the opening day against Bishop Sullivan that sealed the win for Providence Day. He hit five free throws in the fourth quarter and made 9-10 in the overtime period to secure an 80-76 win.
In the game against nationally ranked Wesleyan Christian, Wertz chipped in 18 points with 14 of them coming in the second half. Standing a lengthy 6’5 with an enormous 6’10 wingspan, we have watched the maturation and development before our very eyes. Each game, Wertz is becoming more assertive on offense and aggressive on defense. In three games against stellar competition, the youthful Wertz is averaging 21 PPG. Gone is the reputation of being just a spot up shooter. He has become an effective ball handler and has consistently shown the ability to be creative in his moves to the rim. Wertz can score from all three levels and has become one of the better scorers in the state for his class. More importantly, we have seen a more determined effort on defense. He is using his length and aggressiveness to help with rebounding and occasionally blocking a few shots each game.
Currently, Wertz sports offers from Charlotte, Clemson, LaSalle, ODU, Rice, Richmond and Tulane. He has a 3.75 GPA and is taking several AP classes but Providence Day doesn’t have a “weighted” GPA. Wertz is the epitome of the term “student athlete.” He works equally hard in the classroom as well as the basketball court. We have often stated, it’s not where you start but where you finish that is most important. With each passing game, Wertz is finishing strong and don’t be surprised if he’s close to the top when he passes the finish line!
