As we continue to look at programs around the state of North Carolina, our eyes shift to Kings Mountain this upcoming season. After finishing 13-13 overall, could the Mountaineers be a sneaky team to watch this upcoming season? Possibly, especially with the talent they bring back this season and another season under their belt.
Now, they will be losing two key seniors in Keedonn Linney and Jmyun Huskey, both of whom averaged double-figures last year and were impacts on the glass. But this is a team that also has young talent on the rise and a familiar face back on the court.
First, let’s discuss the young talent returning, starting with Ethan Daniel, who had a strong sophomore season in 2027. Averaging 10.5ppg, Daniel was an effective scoring option on the court. 2028 Silas Tate and 2028 Xavier Hutchens are two rising sophomores to look out for, especially with a ton of value they were able to gain last year and with them now having a chance to step up even more this season. These three will be key to this team’s success, and all have a chance to carve out bigger roles this season.
Then you have to talk about a highly intriguing talent that will return to the court for Kings Mountain in 2027 6’4 Caleb Nixon. Nixon, who missed the season last year due to injury, will be coming back to Kings Mountain to suit up and lead, giving the team another true leader on the court. Nixon has size and a strong scoring impact, especially with his ability to knock down shots from outside and use his frame to create. Now fully healthy, he looks to step right in and be a go-to option offensively for this team, and can clearly help fill the void from the talent they lost from last year.
The Mountaineers were competitive throughout the season and lost some tough games, including late in the season. If the talent returning can elevate their play, and Nixon can come back and produce, Kings Mountain has a chance to be a dark horse to watch out for this season.
