Check out some players that stood out on the final day at the Summer Havoc

July for a high school baller means one thing, NCAA Live Period. This is the time of year when colleges file into gyms to get a look at the top talent available and often times leads to offers. Summer Havoc kicks off July with a bang as only Phenom Hoops can do it. Over the next few days I will share some of the standout players and performances on display. Day 4’s standouts are as follows:

Ricky Nelson, 6’2 2017 G with Texas Elite – Ricky has a nice looking skill set on him as well as the athleticism needed to maximize it. He is quick with the ball in his hands and owns a very pretty stroke from deep. He is a threat to pull up from anywhere but can also put it on the floor and beat you to the hole when he wants. Needless to say this makes him hard to defend. He has the tools needed to be a good PG but did not show that as much here as he was used mostly off the ball, at times he even worked the high post. This kid has already picked up some D1 offers and if he continues to play like he has here this weekend I’d expect more to find their way to him before long.

Matt Kormylo, 6’3 2019 G at 22ft Academy (SC) – You do not often see kids this young with a shot this pure. You don’t see a kid this young show as much ball IQ as this kid does either as a rule. You never see both in a kid this young as a rule so that makes Matt some sort of basketball of basketball unicorn then I guess as he shows he has both. He has easy range, a nice release, finds the gaps, and does it all with a purpose out on the floor. Matt also shows some toughness by being willing to go to the glass and working for a rebound. He needs to get stronger, especially in his hands and get his handles going a bit better but otherwise I like everything I see here.

Marques Spann, 6’3 2018 G at Lake Worth HS (FL) – Spann had a good weekend here at this event showing off nice athletic ability, good skill, and a bit of an edge. He has the type of slender body that a ball player is supposed to have with the type of bounce you love to see from a wing player. He was at his best when in transition and going to the lane but he also showed a nice jumper as well. His range works best from the md-range in but he can step out and hurt you from deep if you let him. He will try to do a bit too much with it at times and will rely too much on his athleticism at others but this kid can ball. If I am looking for an athletic 2 in this class at his level I’m making sure I am checking up on his progress.

Jeremiah Allen, 6’9 2017 F at Aggieland HS (TX) – Big is a word that does not do this kid justice when describing him. The height catches your attention as he walks in the gym but then you look at just how big he is to go with that and you just know you got something good to work with. He OWNS the glass on both ends of the floor and can pretty much shut down the lane on the defensive end as well. His range and general offensive game is a bit limited at this point as he shows no post moves or face up game but get him the ball inside close and he will finish. He has good hands and keeps the ball high but I am not sure as to what kind of ceiling is here due to limited athletic ability as compared to other bigs in the class that were on display this weekend.

Ryan Schwieger, 6’6 2017 W at Weddington HS Ryan came into this event having been billed as one of the D1 prospects to watch so he was not about to sneak up on anyone here. He was a marked man each time he took the floor and that extra attention helped to pull his numbers down some in the games I covered of his. While the stats may not have been what I expected from him the skills shown by this talented wing were. He showed he has every shot needed, is comfortable with the ball with back to basket or facing up, and showed he knows how to move the ball around the offense. He needs to get stronger but is already effective on the glass thanks to his positioning and fundamentals. Several D1 schools like James Madison (in attendance today), are already on this kid. I saw nothing here to suggest anything but future success for this kid this weekend.

Lots of great action going on all weekend long. Be on the lookout for news and notes. Until next time, see you in the gym!
