After a lot of stressors throughout the last twelve to fourteen months, the grassroots basketball landscape has finally returned to normalcy. The shoe-circuits and high school LIVE periods were restored for the betterment of these young prospects who are simply fighting for an equal opportunity to advance to the collegiate ranks. Although this presents Division I programs with the chance to start attending events, most non-D1s have already been allowed to travel over the last year or so. So, with the July LIVE periods quickly approaching, we figured it would be beneficial to take a closer look at the expected talent on display. This article will look at the NC Gaters…
While there are a lot of attractive pieces within this roster, it would be difficult for anyone to ignore the appeal surrounding Nolan Hodge. Between his combination of IQ, size, and perimeter skill, he possesses a ton of enticing qualities and should be a definite priority amongst Division I coaches as the leader of this squad. Unfortunately, Josh Scovens is slated to be sidelined with an injury—but he would’ve also been a major draw for college coaches. His blend of inside-out abilities and blossoming versatility should still allow him to collect plenty of offers throughout the summer.
The chemistry is evident with year-round teammates like Brent Randleman, Julius Harrison, and Adam Vincent (Piedmont Classical) or Drew Watkins and Connor Ballou (Northwest Guilford). Randleman has really come into his own over the last twelve months, allowing the reclassification year to catch up to his age group. He was already a quality player, but his physique, athleticism, and overall leadership have all visibly improved. Although the only rising junior, Harrison is extremely versatile and continues to showcase steady progression over the years. He will be a name worth noting for next summer. Vincent is quite possibly the best shooter on a team full of marksmen and, at 6-foot-5, has the size and athleticism to make his presence consistently felt within the flow of the action.
Meanwhile, Ballou and Watkins also fit nicely with this squad. Ballou offers useful point guard ability and a reliable shooting presence—both off the catch and dribble. He’s tougher than he appears and offers a nice change of pace with the ball in his hands. As for Watkins, he’s somewhat between positions but possesses size, versatility, and a well-rounded skillset—which seems to naturally lead to production in all facets of the game. He also makes his presence felt as a rebounder and transition threat. Additionally, Jackson Helms is another tough, heady guard with athleticism, defensive prowess, and a high motor. He always seems to be making a play on the ball or finding ways to involve himself in the action, and should ultimately end up at the next level like everyone else on this roster.
