This upcoming weekend, Phenom Hoops will return to the Convention Center in Raleigh, North Carolina for another massive Live period event. After having two separate venues (Raleigh and Rock Hill) earlier this spring, now everyone will compete under one roof. Not only does this make for a heightened experience with college coaches, but it also makes the pool of teams that much stronger. The four-day event will feature a ton of noteworthy teams and countless college-level prospects. Among those teams is Oviedo Elite—a squad that showed flashes of dominance at our G3 Live in May. Let’s take a closer look at their pieces…
Although their entire roster should be worthy of attention from coaches, guys like Aaron Wood and Dawson Jean-Charles really set the tone for this group. Wood reliably dictates the action as a main creator, displaying the IQ, pace, and creation instincts to consistently make plays for himself and others. He scores well within the flow of the action, sets up others at a strong rate, and simply knows how to position himself to impact the game as a defender and rebounder. Meanwhile, Jean-Charles is arguably the most intriguing prospect on the team. He’s an incredibly tough, rugged two-way guard who knows how to find constant production while leading by example on both ends of the floor. Jean-Charles is a well-rounded piece with a terrific blend of IQ, skill, and athleticism. He’s a physical, suffocating defender whose size and strength allow him to reliably defend across multiple positions. Jean-Charles rebounds and makes hustle plays as needed. Offensively, he’s a polished scorer and excellent shooting threat who can spot-up, create off the bounce, and make smart decisions. Jean-Charles creates well for himself and others, but is also comfortable operating without the ball.
Additionally, Aaron Slaney, Dakarai Thompson, and Darion Hines each play vital roles and have clear appeal next-level prospects. Slaney is an inside-out forward with a high motor and the ability to consistently outwork opponents on both ends of the floor. He’s a smooth perimeter shooter and quality finisher around the basket whose constant energy allow him to find consistent opportunities. Slaney plays much bigger than his size as a defender and rebounder, and frequently outworks opponents for extra possessions with his effort on the glass. Thompson is a versatile, adaptable wing who knows how to do a little bit of everything and fill in the gaps on both ends of the floor. He utilizes his physical tools and tough, scrappy nature to overwhelm opponents defensively. In addition to his ability to create havoc, Thompson has the necessary skill to operate in various roles offensively. Rounding out this group, Hines stands out as a clear difference-maker who impacts the game without needing a ton of touches. He’s a smart, unselfish initiator and useful scorer from all levels, but finds ways to make plays within the flow of the action. Hines communicates well and defends his position with energy defensively.
