Given the general ebbs and flows of talent throughout the state, one could argue that public-school basketball in Greensboro is competitive as ever. Not only did the city have a state champion last season (Smith) but it truly felt like any team could win on any given night. This year should be even better. Teams like Northwest Guilford, Northeast Guilford, Northern Guilford, Grimsley, Dudley, and several others should take another step forward. Meanwhile, Southwest Guilford is quietly one of the more intriguing squads throughout the area. They might not have the depth of some teams mentioned above, but they certainly have enough star power behind the likes of Brayden Gatling and DJ Howze. Let’s take a closer look at each guy…

Given his consistent production over the years, it’s easy to assume Gatling will remain a leader and focal point for this group. He’s an incredibly quick, speedy floor general with a lethal penetration sense and the ability to reliably generate shots for himself and others. Gatling utilizes his tight handle and sharp change of direction to effortlessly break down opponents off the bounce. He touches the paint at a high volume and finishes or locates open shooters, but also frequently attacks in the midrange. Gatling plays well through contact, particularly for his size, and mixes it up nicely from all levels to keep defenses guessing. He’s a pesky on-ball defender who anticipates well to force turnovers at the point of attack. Entering his junior year, Gatling will be a definite target for college programs.

Meanwhile, Howze has a very appealing toolkit with size, strength, athleticism, and a blossoming skillset. He’s already a terrific athlete with the physicality to overwhelm opponents on both ends of the floor. Howze is able to generate matchup problems with his blend of size and skill. Smaller opponents cannot physically contain him, while bigger opponents tend to struggle with his perimeter ability and general mobility. However, Howze can reliably defend both spots. He’s already capable of initiating the offense as needed, but typically finds opportunities as an off-ball threat. Howze moves well without the ball, finishes well through contact, and is capable of knocking down jumpers at a solid clip. Add in his rebounding presence, defensive versatility, and general upside, and it’s easy to get excited. Howze will be a prospect to monitor closely as he continues to progress over the foreseeable future.
