This past weekend, Phenom Hoops traveled out to Methodist College in Fayetteville, North Carolina, for our eighth annual Hoops and Dreams Showcase. The event returned to its original debut spot for a quality two-day stretch of basketball featuring many of the top local teams. Across the 14 games, there were several standouts, storylines, and meaningful takeaways that we will examine closer. Let’s continue by taking a closer look at the incredibly talented duo of AJ Morman and KJ Terry of Southern Durham…

Anyone within the grassroots scene should already recognize Morman as a crafty, intelligent floor general and one of the top players in North Carolina. He displays a calm, steady demeanor and a very high level of confidence with the ball in his hands. Morman possesses a tight handle and the quickness to effortlessly break down opponents off the bounce. He touches the paint at a high volume, where he’s able to finish, score on floaters/runners, or locate the open man. Morman has a keen sense for making the right decision with unwavering consistency. He’s a terrific playmaker with the pace, vision, and creation skills to elevate his teammates. However, this squad needs his scoring output. Morman is a capable three-point shooter, but is arguably at his best when asserting himself in the midrange or attacking the basket and getting to the line. He mixes it up in a variety of ways, but will apply consistent penetrating pressure if allowed. Morman rebounds the ball very well for his size and looks to push the break at every opportunity. He also possesses nice instincts to force turnovers at a quality rate defensively.

Although he’s a new addition to the roster, Terry has rapidly emerged as a leader for this group. He truly showcased the full arsenal over the weekend. Terry is a long, wiry, versatile wing who can do a lot of different things on the court. He’s an explosive athlete with a tough, physical, well-rounded identity. Terry is a blossoming offensive player who seems to make strides with each new viewing. He’s always been a quality passer and downhill threat who can put constant pressure on the rim. However, Terry is clearly taking the next step as a scorer and all-around focal point. He took over the game in critical moments, making massive defensive plays, securing rebounds, and knocking down timely shots when needed. Terry continues to shoot the ball at a high percentage while maintaining his terrific open-floor ability. Add his sharp instincts and switchable defensive presence, and it’s easy to see why he’s trending as one of the top prospects in his class. Division I coaches would be wise to start getting involved.
