Now that we’ve reached the final stage of postseason play for 3A, we can preview the championship matchup between Southern Durham and Ben L. Smith. In our initial previews, Smith was labeled as a darkhorse contender. At the same time, we referred to Southern as “arguably the most appealing squad in the field, as they have a well-structured team and the best player, Jackson Keith, in the entire classification.” Both statements still ring true. In five playoff games, the Golden Eagles have won two games by a single possession and three games by double digits. Meanwhile, the Spartans haven’t lost a game in 2025 and have won their five postseason games by an average scoring margin of 23.2 PPG. So, who has the edge?

Between their record, individual pieces, and team structure, the Golden Eagles truly have what it takes to win it all. Coach Partee has gone 27-4 twice (27-3 currently) and both seasons resulted in late playoff losses to the eventual champion. However, there are several reasons to believe this team is different. Jyi Dawkins is an all-around leader, Kenny Miller dictates the action as a primary creator, Tay Mann is a natural glue-guy, Kadyn Turner-Scott has been a visible x-factor, and Tysere Payne has visibly elevated himself into a college-level piece. Guys like Gavin Palmore, Kendrick Johnson, and Micah Cowan also provide meaningful minutes for this group. Ultimately, they have the right structure in place.

Similarly, the Spartans are also enjoying their most successful season in recent memory. Jackson Keith (Butler signee) is clearly one of the few names who should contend for Gatorade Player of the Year in North Carolina—especially if he wins this final game. His all-around identity will be tough to contain. Star freshman AJ Morman has only gotten better and better throughout the year. His IQ, poise, and exceptional creation instincts make him incredibly impactful. Dwight Vincent is a quality shooting threat and Zaquan Bowling makes his presence felt as a reliable interior piece. Additionally, the group of Jakari Glaspie, Devin Perkins, and Kejon Hughes offer impactful minutes for the Spartans.
Although the Golden Eagles have stronger depth, it’s quite difficult to bet against Keith and everything he’s shown throughout the season. As stated in the original 3A preview, we were hedging with whoever won between Swansboro and Southern Durham—so that’s exactly what we will do. Both teams are very worthy and whoever wins will be undeniably deserving.
