What to Watch at Phenom Team Camp

This upcoming weekend, Phenom Hoops will travel down to Rock Hill, South Carolina, to host our annual June Team Camp. The event always features a slew of the most talented teams and individuals within the Carolinas, and this year’s will be no different. Leading up to the event, we will take a closer look at players and subplots to monitor. South Mecklenburg is coming off a 17-11 season, during which they only graduated two seniors. Let’s take a closer look….
The likes of Ben Houpt and Jim Gatehouse return as the two most productive players on the roster. Both guys stand out as steady, adaptable, well-rounded pieces who can alter their approach based on team needs. Houpt is a smart, polished wing with an excellent blend of size, creation skills, and scoring polish. He’s a reliable creator for himself and others, and regularly initiates the offense for this group. Houpt is more commonly known for his efficient three-level scoring, but continues to make strides as a playmaking threat. He’s a quality defender who utilizes his body and anticipation well to keep opponents in front. Houpt is also a useful rebounder for his position. He should be an obvious target for college coaches.
Meanwhile, Gatehouse offers another skilled presence as a 6-foot-5 perimeter player. He’s smart, confident, and capable of producing in various types of roles. Gatehouse shoots the ball at a high clip from the perimeter, attacks the basket well, and can knock down pull-up jumpers in the midrange. He’s a solid passer but arguably at his best when looking to score. Gatehouse also provides activity on the glass and solid defensive prowess. Rounding out their trio, Connor Yett is a valuable x-factor for this group. He possesses a sturdy frame and fundamentally sound approach to the game. Whether finishing around the basket, making hustle plays, or filling in the gaps on both ends of the floor, Yett finds ways to make an impact. Fans and coaches can watch the Sabres this weekend at Team Camp.
