The Stars
Just like in any Phenom event you attend, you will have proven names, who go out to prove their hype. They are eager to take on all comers, at any expense. Here are the names of the higher rated guys who lived up to their hype at the South Carolina Top 80.
Darius Hicks 6’7” 2016 22 Ft Academy (Greenville)
Hicks, a former Mississippi St commitment, is a man’s man on the court. When the long armed power forward sticks to the paint he is tough to stop. Hicks put on a show with an array of powerful dunks and blocked shots. Hicks also showed touch out to the 3-point line and the ability to attack from the high post. Hicks claims Southern Miss, Georgia Tech, and Ole Miss have offered. Hicks is a Top 150 type guy in the country and should continue to get Power 5 offers as the season continues.
Juwan Gary 6’6” 2019 Gray Collegiate (Columbia)
Gary came in with a reputation as a ranked player, however after this event Gary solidified himself among the nation’s top 10 players overall. Gary is a highly explosive wing, both in transition and off put backs. Gary also showed consistent range from 18’ extended off the catch and pull up. It was a high level showing for him
Christian Brown 6’6” 2019 AC Flora HS (Columbia)
Brown has the same type of reputation as Gary, locally. However, after his showing at the South Carolina Top 80, his reputation will grow to a similar stature nationally. Brown plays with a high motor and defends multiple areas on the floor. While he still needs to gain strength, he has the handle to possess in the half court, and make plays. Brown is a Top 50 type player nationally with upside more much more.
Brevin Galloway 6’3” 2016 Seneca HS (Seneca)
Galloway committed to College of Charleston back in May. During this time Galloway had been suffering from injury for around a year. Finally back full strength for the South Carolina Top 80, Galloway had his full bag of tricks on display. Playing confidently on the ball, Galloway looked as if he could transition into a combo type guard. Galloway displayed a sneaky explosion in transition, and deep range as a shooting guard. This one will be good in the CAA.
Kyle Rawson 6’8” 2018 22 Ft Academy (Greenville)
Phenom Hoops ranked Rawson as the Top prospect in South Carolina’s 2018 class. During the South Carolina Top 80 he didn’t do anything to quell this claim. Rawson is a slender lefty, who is very skilled, one national analyst suggested Jake Layman. During the event he showed the ability to shoot with range, attack from the wing, and deliver high quality passes. Iona offered early, however more should continue to roll in.
Jalen Cameron 6’4” 2017 West Florence HS (Florence)
Cameron ended his high school season with a high level local reputation. Through the summer he continued to play at a high level and picked up a regional reputation. After his showing during this event, Cameron’s reputation will continue to grow through the east coast. Cameron is a tough defender who plays with a chip on his shoulder. He is long, and a downhill type wing that finishes above the rim. He also showed range during this event, scoring consistently at 3-levels. Cameron averaged 20 points per game here, good for second overall. He has an offer from Towson, expect that list to grow.
Deshaun Leftwich 6’3” 2016 Legacy Charter (Greenville)
Leftwich has been playing in in big games for a while. He shared the back court last season with Dennis Smith at Trinity Christian. Over the summer he played for Team Charlotte, as they won the Under Armour Finals. This event showed that the hype around Leftwich was deserved. He led the event in scoring, he won Mr Top 80, and he walked off the court with a lot of recruitment. That recruitment should not only remain, but continue to rise incrementally as the season progresses.
Duane Moss 6’7” 2017 Carolina Forest (Myrtle Beach)
Moss led Horry County in scoring last season, averaging 20 points per game. He played over the summer with the Upward Stars SE and has picked up multiple offers since the summer has ended. Moss showed why in this event with as he is extremely efficient. For the event Moss shot around 80%, scoring at all 3 levels. He carries offers from Tennessee Tech and Charlotte. Moss is a Top 150 type in his class.
